Hi Melody, probably the easiest way to networking with people here in Chile is using WAYN or similar webs.

I think the only issue on coming here is to get a job, this is not easy and Chile is pricey because strong of peso, it may be your first concern to ensure some mean of living, after that, any other problem will be minor. Suerte!

melodymary wrote:Hello All,

I'm Melody from North Carolina. I've been obsessed with the idea of moving to Chile for a while now, and I plan to do so in 3 months. I don't know anyone there, but I would like to make some connections before I go. What is the best online social networking site in Chile? I would really just like to meet some friendly people who are willing to offer advice.

I have so many questions but I'm going to poke around this site for a while for answers.

I have to agree with PX's first response. Had your original statement been. "I'm Melody from North Carolina. I've been obsessed with the idea of visiting/ doing a bike trip/ hiking in Chile for a while now, and I plan to do so in 3 months......' then I am sure you would have been flooded with enthusiastic responses. But the idea of 'moving' to a country that one has never even visited as a tourist makes little sense (to me..... speaking only for myself) unless there is a valid reason (work, met the love of your life, etc.).... Moving kind of implies permanency.

Were I you I would visit first. Or at least move here with a good escape plan (return ticket money, etc.) in case things do not work out. All the best of luck though in whatever you decide.

I know what it means to follow your dream. I've always done that, without hesitation, all my life. You will be heavily tested, for sure, but don't let it discourage you. It is your life.
The people here do not wish anything bad for you, thus the comments. They have been there and know what it means. All the comments in this thread are there to help you.
I am a bit of a nomad myself. One morning I woke up thinking that I want to move to Chile because I have been intrigued by it since I was 10 and read a book about a sea fare to Valparaiso. Now I am finding all the information that I possibly can although my family says a strict 'no'. For them Finland is a paradise and they have been living in Venezuela, Canada, Germany, France, Italy and the U.K.
Listen to the advice because it is offered to you to help you make the right decision but ultimately don't let anyone discourage you. It's your life and your life experience. You own it.

I´m a bit nostalgic remembering that in the past this forum was polite, supportive and helpful for anyone looking for information. At certain point turned on beligerant and many oppinions seems to me so strong that are hard to distinguish from arrogance. But, well, maybe is just my view.

In my book sarcasm and satire are shining diamonds but they are sometimes difficult to deal with at forums where we only communicate with words. They are sort of seasoned genres of communication and may be overwhelming when encountered here.
They are also good tools to test your determination. If you get scared by them, then it is probably good to check the reasoning behind your decision.
I don't detect any hostility at this forum, just different approaches and perspectives that are based on experience.
:D
Life is a great teacher, especially when you follow your heart and don't let anyone discourage you. I am proud to own all the mistakes that I have ever made because they have made me the person who I am today. For the original poster I wish strength in her heart.

I'm starting to think that Mr Px is embarking on a new career in stand up comedy and trying out all his new material on us. I'm enjoying it.

Melodymary - A lot of what has been posted is correct. To move to a new country on impulse could backfire badly, but some us (including me) had to move here quite quickly for various reasons. In our case it was my husband's job. We were lucky enough to move here as a family and managed to set up connections using various networking sites, so the transition for us has been, at times hard, but definitely worth the effort and getting better each day. We settled here easily and maybe we were lucky, some people don't. The information you can get on this forum is invaluable but you have to appreciate and take on baord things that you may not want to hear. Good luck with whatever you decide to do but please understand that if you do decide to move here there will be difficult times as well as wonderful ones. And earthquakes.Don't forget the earthquakes. :)

Time to once again rain praise and respect onto tombrad. Probably the first chileno to join the forum and relay tons of valuable information and wisdom and cultural insights that only a born and bred native could provide. He has always kept his sense of humor and has never gotten bent out of shape by the comments of this formerly inhabited primarily by foreigners (to Chile) forum.

Melody,

You are getting good, if slightly rough, advice here. Express what you are doing and why. Search the site a bit and ask some specifc, perhaps pointed, questions. There have been lots of people who wanted to move to Chile, did so, and got some rude and very costly surprises. There are also those who have done it and made dreams a reality, a number of whom post here.

Know what you want, go in with eyes and mind open, plan for the worst, hope for the best. This forum has a ton of data to mine and can provide more once you've narrowed the scope of your questions and drawn a clearer picture of what you are after.

And never mind the rough humor & discourse, part & parcel of this place. It will prepare you for driving and using shopping carts once in Chile.
