Earth Hour 2011

Postby janni » Fri Mar 25, 2011 10:35 pm

When I joined the forum 2 years ago Earth Hour was observed. It introduced me to the concept, and struck a chord.

But after all these years, is Earth Hour not to be observed in 2011 at All Chile.Net with a ceremonial shut down of the forum? Without even an observation that it is almost upon us?

9. What is Earth Hour's position on safety?

Earth Hour wants everyone to be absolutely safe and never to turn off any lights or power that would in any way compromise the safety of any individual in a private or public space. While Earth Hour is asking people to turn off lights for an hour the intention is never to make anyone or any place unsafe. So please put safety first when deciding what lights to turn off during your participation.

Attn. RCX:

Listen to the advice. Please put safety first. Especially, in a *private* space.

Take care.

There are lots of people here who observe some sort of alternative Earth Hour every day by entering into some sort of state of dormancy and accomplishing absolutely nothing. Which sort of reminds me of the effective purpose of the original.

Having entered into "some sort of" state of dormancy, a question could arise: how would one know that they were "accomplishing absolutely nothing" at the time of dormancy? For the very state of "dormancy" seems to make one unable to clearly observe that they are "accomplishing absolutely nothing" at that moment(s). Please feel free to prove me wrong.

Ah Gracias Admin, and I'll raise a glass of plonk to all in the dark, both here and abroad - those who are celebrating both volunarily and involutarily.

ooooooh, we are having a little problem with earth hour this year.

Due to the bad Internet connection I have where I am at right now (rain on claro dongle), if I take the forum offline we might not get it back online.

It took 20 mins to get this message posted. If It clears up in a little bit, I might give it a try.

If I don't get the traditional message posted, everyone have a glass a wine anyway and turn off the computer.

...Make sure you have alternative light sources handy before Earth Hour starts, like torches or flashlights. That way if you need to see, you have a light source close at hand...

"I know, I know, incandescent light bulbs are the devil. The fact that any of us still use this antiquated technology is a testament to our stupidity as a species...BUT!

It's actually far more efficient than any other light source from Edison's day. A 40-watt light bulb produces about as much light as 40 candles. If you burned 500 candles instead of using a 40-watt light bulb, you would be burning several gallons of paraffin (refined from crude oil) per day, resulting in about 10 times more CO2 emissions.

Of course, we don't burn 40 candles. We burn one or two or three. So, yes, paraffin candles are not a significant polluter. When I switch off my lights this Earth Hour, and light my candles, I will be replacing one 12-watt CFL with three candles. The result, honestly, will be about neutral. The candles will produce a little bit more CO2 than would be produced by the CFL. (Thanks, by the way, to enochthered for doing all the math for me.)

The big difference is the amount of light I'll have to work with. With just my candles burning, chances are my wife and I will have a hilarious dinner in which we can't find the forks, and then we'll try to read our books without enough light to actually read them, and then, probably, we'll find some darkness-related activity to entertain ourselves.

And yes, that sounds lovely, but the candle is not saving any energy, it's just making the world a little softer for one evening. And, hopefully, it will remind us of the gifts that technology brings us, so maybe we can not take them for granted quite so much."

That just one take. I have seen similar calculations....

Not to mention the damage done to the environment in transporting these people and their candles to La Moneda. Oh the horror!

I for one did not observe earth hour. I use energy and water sparingly on a daily basis. The pizza they didn't put in the oven during earth hour got put in at 10. The report due for work the next day which did not get done during earth hour go done before and the laptop they typed it on used the same amount of energy.... Symbolic gesture here in North America where we are for the most part energy pigs.
