Can I sell my Canadian plated Jeep in a Zona Franca?

Postby grecy » Thu Mar 24, 2011 6:27 pm

Hey guys,

Looks like some excellent knowledge here, maybe someone can help.
I'm just a tourist, not getting residency or anything like that.
I drove my Jeep down to Patagonia from Canada and I'm trying to sell it now (easier said than done)
The Jeep is used and 11 years old.

Does anyone know if I can take it into a Zona Franca and have the customs "temporary import papers" canceled (so I can leave the country) and then someone else can buy it and make the paperwork for it to have Chilean number plates & registration?

Do you guy know what kind of tax the new buyer would have to pay? (I think something like 6% + 19% ?)

And yes, I understand the vehicle will be a "Zona Fraca" car, and I understand the restrictions that come with that label.
At this point I just need to offload it so I can leave.

Thanks very much,
-Dan

It was over twenty years ago, but when I found myself in central Chile with an old truck I had driven down, I ultimately abandoned it to customs, it was pretty worked and worth little at that point. After 1 1/2 years of extentions I had found no way of doing it. Of course every one I met had an idea of a "movida". But legally... My plans were to stay in Chile. You should talk to actual customs agents up there, not helpful know it alls.
I wish you luck.

Send me the details on the vehicle, and where you are now so that I can see it. Msg by PM if you wish. If you can get to Puerto Natales I'd like to have a look. I will be near the Pto Natales aduana tomorrow and I can ask them for the slickest escape for you. I don't actually need a jeep but let's look at what you have down here.

Costs will depend on who buys your vehicle. If we declare the purchase price to be low, you can still receive your actual payment that may differ from the notarised bill of sale. If it is to be "imported" formally into a Zona Franca it can only be purchased by a legal resident of the exempted regions. Importation has to be done at the ZF by an authorised "usuario" registered at the ZF and that involves some additional costs. If the vehicle is not in the homologation database then importation can involve some additional costs. We can also make out a legal bill of sale in coordination with local Aduana immediately so that you can get out of the country even without actually transferring the vehicle through the ZF. If you are leaving Chile you may wish to have payment in CDN or US dollars.

I have imported six vehicles here, 5 of them through the ZF.

Sorry Px I didn't just hear you suggest that the numbers be fudged so that less duty and taxes are paid did I? I mean the way some always go on and on about crime in Chile and how Chileans are all thieves and all (not you I'm sure)..... Surely I didn't read what I just did. Great advice btw. I would do the same. I live in a glass house and prefer not to throw rocks. :)

OK guys, wow, thanks for the info.

patagoniax it sounds like you know what you're doing. So essentially, you are saying I can do it through the ZF for sure. Maybe a little time consuming, but it CAN be done. Nice.

Checkout the following for all the Jeep info:
http://theroadchoseme.com/jeep-for-sale

I'm actually in El Bolson, Argentina right now, but would not be against coming back to Puerto Natales if need be. While I want to leave, I'm not absolutely strapped for time, I have a couple of weeks if need be.
I'm more than happy to write a very low sale price, and accept money for something else :)

I'll PM you my email address.

Thanks!

edit -- see later posts after talking with aduana today.

Note that valuation of vehicle is based on Aduana database and not on the compraventa indications

Thanks for the quick reply. (and damn!)

Not that I want to do it... but do you know what turning it into parts involves?

Also, do you happen to know anything about the importation/sale process in Argentina and if it's any different in Tierra Del Feugo?

Thanks again

It's too bad that you aren't in Regina Saskatchewan. In said case I would advise you to leave it parked overnight and come back the next day to find it missing. Then in two days when it shows up totaled and gutted by fire you would be able to put in an insurance claim.

Hope you had a great trip Dan. You did something I mull over in my head periodically.

It gets better ! that was the suggestion from my attorney here, as a solution for letting this guy out of the country.

Edit - see the thread further on in which we discuss how Aduana determines value of the used vehicle, through their database and not the compraventa.

What I did back in the seventies, overland from North America to CL, in the days when Penquista was but a wee slacker.
