British equivalent of Chilean 'enseñanza media'

Postby matthew » Tue Mar 08, 2011 5:16 pm

Hello all,

I am planning to study at a professional institute in Santiago and they have asked for the validation of my 'licencia de enseñanza media'. I am stuck as to whether this refers purely to my GCSE certificates as that is my compulsorary secondary education (11 - 16 years), or if it is instead (or in addition) my A' Levels from sixth form college (16 - 18 years), which is optional further education, but required to study at a university in England. The lady I spoke to at the British embassy here in Santiago told me I should call and ask my secondary school if they are equivalent to Chilean enseñanza media , but I am doubtful that the admin staff at Blatchington Mill School in Hove will have this information in their handbook :)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Personally, I would provide both lots of certificates, GCSEs and A-levels as the school leaving age in Chile is 18. While only some take the PSU university entrance tests, everyone gets some sort of leaving certificate from the school, the 'licencia'. That way you're covering both bases, education until UK compulsory age and your education to 18.

Aren't the British embassy rubbish? You might have a little more luck with the Chilean embassy in London, but they're a little random and disorganised as well. At least they might have the knowledge of both education systems that the British embassy don't...
