I am sure you will StevenDC. ;-) I might write in here from time to time, and otherwise you can follow the updates on my blog at christianjessen.net, where I post once in a while about Santiago, Business in South America and so on.
(Not sure if I can make a link, as this forum seems to be anno '99 with their anti-link policy... ;-))

A bit paranoid? (Like most South Americans apparantly)
Well, to answer your question:
1) I live in a modern building with 24-hour security guard downstairs. Not a guarantee that you will never get robbed, but they keep a track of who's coming in & out of the building.
2) As I don't have an office space (yet), I currently work in the apartment, so I am here most of the time.
3) Even with "all these new things", I don't think it would be a high profile place to rob. The risk of getting caught vs. the value of the stuff in my very tiny 1-room apartment seems pretty ridicolous.

And last of all - the more paranoid you are, the bigger chance there are of it happening. It will suck if I get robbed; but thats life. Doesn't matter if I'm here or in Denmark, or any other place in the world. Thats part of life. The more you worry, the less you will enjoy your life. ;-)

Skoal? You trying to write "skål" (danish for cheers) or something I don't understand? ;-)

Christian B. Jessen wrote:Hi everybody,

Just wanted to come with a small update, as I am now in Santiago. I found a small 1-bedroom flat for 115.000 pesos per month (~$240 USD) in central Santiago, with all of the gastos comunes hopefully going to be around 25-30.000 pesos monthly. .

Sounds good. There are many places in Stgo where you can still find cheap apartments.
I like some areas of San Miguel (south santiago, Linea 2 metro), especially between stations El llano and Lovial, but WEST of gran avenida (the other side is not too nice).
A lot of young middle class couples live in that area, in fact a friend of mine has a 3 BDR apartment, realtively new and she cannot charge more than 200 thousand a month for rent.
