Re: Free (Public) schooling in Chile

Hi all,

My family and I will be heading down to Santiago in September. We have a 7 year old that we want to get into some form of school. Very wary of public schools after reading many posts on the subject. What I'm not clear on is how do you locate the subvencionado schools. Is there an online listing somewhere?

What about preschools, any online listings for these? We have a 4 year old that we may want to put into a school as well.

Thanks so much!

I made a list of some of the subencionado schools in Santiago that had good scores in the test to enter the University in Chile. The first is the one I went to from 8th til' 11th grade. It was a good school and If I was in Chile I would send my 5 children there. I don't know if is the best, but is the one I know...

colegio liahona cordillera, la florida (they have 3 schools, I went to the one in V region... but they are very similar)

colegio el patrocinio de san jose
colegio francisco ramirez
colegio josefino santisima trinidad, providencia
colegio san ignacio, santiago
instituto miguel leon prado, san miguel
instituto presidente errazuriz, las condes
colegio santa cruz, santiago
instituto la salle, la florida
colegio altazor
colegio antilhue la florida, la florida
colegio alcantara de la florida, la florida
colegio castelgandolfo, padre hurtado
colegio oratorio don bosco, santiago
colegio francisco arriagan, santiago
colegio poeta ruben dario, maipu
colegio particular regina pacis, providencia
colegio san joaquin, renca
colegio corazon de maria de san miguel, san miguel
colegio patrona senora de lourdes, la florida
colegio polivalente don orione, cerrillos
colegio divina pastora nunoa, nunoa
colegio particular sagrado corazon de talagan, talagante
colegio alcantara de los altos de penalolen, penalolen
colegio atenas, la florida
colegio rosario concha, la florida
colegio san viator, macul

Hope it helps!

At least in the US you can still find some good schools.

How does a bad US public school compare to a great Chilean public school?

My experience: I have 4 children whom entered school speaking only English that being said, I browsed through the public schools and quickly disqualified them. Not all private schools are expensive. What was most important for us were small class sizes, good reviews from the parents and a school staff which is truly interested in helping your children through the adventure of learning a new language and a new culture. These schools do exist and most certainly in large cities like Santiago and Viña. When we arrived in Chile I sent my six year old to school the following week, the second day of school the teacher comes out flustered and says "¡Sabes que dijo su hija!" I spoke only two words of Spanish so I respond "¿que?" and shes says "¡mil huevona!" and I smile and say "bien". If you are able, give your children and yourselves time to adjust to living in Chile and then look for a school. Good Luck!

Here's a blog from a family who put their kids recently into school in Valpo and are still living there.
