A Hello and a couple questions re: documents

Postby Beli » Sat Jan 29, 2011 3:36 pm

Hello!

I've just found this forum and find it to be full of useful information. Many thanks to everyone contributing. I was born in Chile to Chilean parents, but we moved to the US when I was a year old. So I am not all that familiar with the ins and outs of Chilean culture and documents. I finally became a US citizen a couple years back, but am definitely considering more trips back to visit family and maybe even retire there.

I have a couple questions re: getting my documents from Chile.

I have an expired Chilean passport and have misplaced my birth certificate. I found the option to get a copy of my birth certificate via the Chilean government's Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificacion website, but they ask for a RUN number.

My dad seems to think that it's the same as the Cedula Nacional de Identidad on my passport. Is that true? I was only issued that Cedula number when I got the passport and never got the card since I haven't lived in Chile for a long time. He says they implemented the RUN number after we left.

Has anyone else gotten their Birth Certificate from Chile through this website? Any idea how long it would take? I'm not in a rush, just wondering. I was worried I would have to contact the town records office where I was born or have a family member try and get that info. It's great that they have this option!

Also, is it possible to get my Cedula Nacional de Identidad card online also? Or will that have to be done via the Embassy?

Okay, thanks for any information in advance!

:)

el puelchi,

Thanks for your quick response! :D So just to confirm, the RUN is the same as my Cedula Nacional de Identidad?

I agree that I should just make an appointment at the consulate and do the work necessary to get not only renew my passport, but finally get that carnet. I need to have those things, esp. if I plan on retiring there. They do have at least one picture of me, I was 17 in my passport picture, but that was over a decade ago.

Thanks again!

:)

Yes, your run, rut, passport number are all the same in chile.

Two options:
If you have a us passport, come to chile on a tourist visa, go to the civil registry office and renew both.

Go to the consulate and renew both. Takes longer.

Hey there. I can't speak for the American consulate but I got both my Cedula and Passport through the consulate in Toronto, Canada. I only had an expired cedula to offer as proof of who I was, but they were able to find me in the system. I paid an extra fee to put a rush on it, and had everything in about a week and a half.

I wish I'd known about the birth certificate thing before though. I needed one at one point and just called an Aunt here in Chile who went and requested a copy on my behalf and then mailed it to me. Not the fastest method but it did only cost me about $10 at the time ;)
Does anyone want a very sweet little puppy, she's vaccinated and fixed...
