I've just found this forum and find it to be full of useful information. Many thanks to everyone contributing. I was born in Chile to Chilean parents, but we moved to the US when I was a year old. So I am not all that familiar with the ins and outs of Chilean culture and documents. I finally became a US citizen a couple years back, but am definitely considering more trips back to visit family and maybe even retire there.
I have a couple questions re: getting my documents from Chile.
I have an expired Chilean passport and have misplaced my birth certificate. I found the option to get a copy of my birth certificate via the Chilean government's Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificacion website, but they ask for a RUN number.
My dad seems to think that it's the same as the Cedula Nacional de Identidad on my passport. Is that true? I was only issued that Cedula number when I got the passport and never got the card since I haven't lived in Chile for a long time. He says they implemented the RUN number after we left.
Has anyone else gotten their Birth Certificate from Chile through this website? Any idea how long it would take? I'm not in a rush, just wondering. I was worried I would have to contact the town records office where I was born or have a family member try and get that info. It's great that they have this option!
Also, is it possible to get my Cedula Nacional de Identidad card online also? Or will that have to be done via the Embassy?
Okay, thanks for any information in advance!
