Withdrawing money from a US account

Postby Eileen » Fri Jan 21, 2011 5:49 pm

This may have already been covered, so pardon the ignorance. After almost three years of living here, I would like to withdraw money from a U.S. account, and wasn't certain of what is the best means and the cost involved. All advice would be appreciated.

Well, it depends on how much you want to withdraw.

We just left HSBC here in DC, they assured us that there are NO FEEs for using an ATM in Chile drawing on a US account. I have the brochure stating the same. Exchange fees still apply so maybe that is where they get their money??

Do you have a Premiere account?

If not, check out:

http://flyerguide.com/wiki/index.php/Cr ... n_Exchange
3% at HSBC ATMs; 3% + $1.50 per transaction at non-HSBC ATMs; 0% for US Premier customers

and

http://www.us.hsbc.com/1/2/3/personal/o ... disc#disc3

If the above is true (3% + $1.50), not a good deal IMO. The only plus is that you can do it a Banco Estado machine (Cirrus only) and not pay a 2,500 peso Chile bank fee.

Raises the obvious question: Are there any HSBC ATM machines in Santiago? If so, it looks like with the standard checking account there are no fees?

Hmmm, I've never used one in Chile or recall seeing one. Try the four locations on their Chile web site. And what will you do outside of Santiago (assuming the locations in Santiago have HSBC branded ATM machines ... hope they are not like no-fee Banco Security which does not have ATM machines at all their listed branches)? 3% only and no Chile fee is still a bad deal IMO as this is the same as also Cirrus system Citibank USA.

Interesting... last time I checked, HSBC didn't have a retail banking presence in Chile. Also with a HSBC visa card, Banco Estado's machines never ever worked for me. Santander, BBVA, Edwards... all no problem, but never Banco Estado: I always got some message about the transaction not being currently possible (gave up after a while, can't remember the exact wording). Same problem with Banco de Chile.

Any information about a change in this would be welcome :-)
You are disturbing me. I am picking mushrooms.
