I knew that you were all so miserable without me around that it was just like having me there. Actually I did read the forum every day. Still a wealth of information. And what I realized is that some of you fight like cats and dogs, bitch and argue, misbehave, and sometimes swear all the same so I thought i would pop in.

The thing about PX is that long before he was an engineer he was a journalist and English teacher.

Now as to the situation faced by the OP.

Not meaning to pry but as to your financial situation. Teaching English is alright as a working vacation but the pay is almost never great. The institutos will also make you work split shifts a lot or at least that was my brother's experience. Unless you live close to where you teach you will find it a long day.
You would save a good chunk of money by getting one place rather than two and making one or the other sleep on the couch. Or hire a nana to act as chaperone. There is strength in numbers even in Chile.

Welcome back PdeC. Although this forum has no shortage of polymaths, you appear to be the most erudite. :)
Please keep posting. :!:

A polymath in name only. Because I was born in Chile and raised in Canada I can kind of straddle both sides of the fence. But because of that I suffer from 'Ni de aqui Ni de Alla' Syndrome. It is a quite debilitating ailment to have actually. Thanks for the compliment but when it comes to having street sense from real on the ground, living in Chile type experience I would probably get you killed. Last time I took a micro in Santiago I ended up in La Cisterna. Patagoniax, Puelche, Admin.... Those are the real experts when it comes to surviving as an expat in the maze that is Chile.

PdeC,

I have dual UK/US citizenship and can somewhat relate to your 'neither from here nor there' syndrome comment as it took me many years to adjust to life in the US.
Your modesty notwithstanding, you bring a wealth of knowledge to this forum. However, you are quite right in pointing out that Patagoniax, El Puelche, and Admin. are undoubtedly 'on the ground' experts in Chile.

Salud!

Ja, not the best word, "fewer" would be better :D Being a scientist and mixing up the 5 languages in my head certainly doesn't help when it come to English grammar!

Agreed! This forum has much useful advise but...yikes, seems like some folks may need something else to occupy their time with other than trivial debate on proper English.
I will also be new to Santiago, next week in fact, so anyone willing to throw out some pertinent information on the city would be welcomed with open ears.
Cheers all.
