Working as a computer engineer in Santiago

Postby johan » Sun Jan 09, 2011 1:27 pm

Hi everyone,

Nice forum you got going on. Lots of useful information.

I'm investigating the possibility to come and work to Chile. From what I've been reading in the forum it seems to be quite tricky to find a job as a foreigner. What further complicates my situation is that my spanish is still at a basic level (although getting better). Also, I'm only 24 years old.

I'll will receive my masters degree in computer engineering in a few months here in Finland. I have over 2 years of work experience in engineering, which if I have understood correctly is not common amongst recently graduated students in Chile. My biggest competences lie in Java EE and Java EE Web development.

What do you think about my chances for finding a job? Are there more chances in the software engineering field? An opinion from someone in the computer engineering industry would be especially appreciated. Of course all advice is very appreciated.

Thank you
johan

Others can hazard better informed opinions, but it would be my observation that your specialty, while useful in some market areas, is not in such great and unserved demand that you would get many offers in Chile. There is a perception among many Chilean software engineering graduates that their prospects are better outside of Chile. Once in a while there are foreign (US, Canadian, etc) companies in Chile that advertise for English speaking software engineering and other specialties inside Chile, but I would say that the "demand is not great" and such jobs would be few. Not knowing Spanish severely limits your opportunities on the local economy and anyway salaries are generally low.

You can do a search on the country's main newspaper job adverts if you like http://clasificados.elmercurio.com/

My son, who has quite a lot of experience in Java, web design and computer security, spent 5 years here trying to get a business going because he likes Chile, but finally he left in disgust and now a year later makes 10 times as much money in Canada. And has clients who pay on time, etc etc
