Question about Investment Property

Postby Matisse » Thu Nov 25, 2010 8:35 pm

Greetings, this is my first post here. I've been reading the threads on people buying real estate property for investment purposes. My husband is from Chile, living here in New York for 10 years now. We are starting to do research on where would be the best places to buy apartments and/or land. We currently own a few acres in Villaricca but are interested in possibly buying more. We were thinking of buying an apartment in Santiago but think that Temuco is also a good investment opportunity given that it is growing so rapidly. We are looking to buy something in cash, around $50 or $60 grand and then a few years down, get another property, etc, etc. We are looking also for a good return. In your opinion, where would be the best place to begin and what are your thoughts on buying property in Santiago as opposed to Temuco.

Best,

Olga Shtatlender

Have your management company lined up, they are much more important than the area or what you are buying, my $0.02 worth. Santiago has a large excess of apartments in that range and the prices are dropping, will they drop more?? That’s the $30-70,000 question. On buying, the laws are transparent as long as it is done properly, but you know that from your land in the south.

If I had a spare $60k I would buy a small apartment on the beach in La Serena and rent it out. The remaining spaces along the Avenida del Mar are quickly filling up with buildings and they're already starting to construct a second row further back. But I would plan on having good earthquake/tsunami insurance and set aside some money for frequent cleaning and repainting due to the level of humidity.

Cheers,

James.
