Re: Cannondale MT800 tandem...

As an avid mountain biker I have to say that the bike is not over priced. I have owned 3 Gary Fishers2 specialized stumpjumpers and a Kona as well as a specialized Epic carbon frame road bike over the last 20 years.
I put over 9000 miles on my epic in a year with only routine maintenance. A good mountain bike will cost you over 2000 dollars. I would not even consider buying a walmart bike for anything other than an excursion around the block. And it might not make that trip.
This is probably in another thread and I keep meaning to search for same as my dream is to one day ride Chile from North to South. If you are going to bike in southern Chile, Araucaniax's 15000 peso bike will not get the job done.
So for what it's worth, I would say that any insinuation that new members are being taken advantage of is not fair. One is perfectly able to research the bike and fair prices on the internet before buying. And yes, the case adds value.
The bike in question has a frame that you will never outgrow and does not noodle under hard pedaling loads. Could you get this bike cheaper if you were in the states? Probably but that applies to everything in Chile. There are many more people upgrading in the high end market there (north america) all the time so prices on used bikes will always be less.
Great pics from the road btw!

However, since one of the nicer functions of this forum is to warn newbies when they are getting skinned, I can't see any reason for a regular to NOT post in the classifieds when he or she thinks the price is high and that better deals could be easily obtained.

Not that I am accusing the bicycle of being over-priced. I'm speaking in generalizations, not about this specific ad. I certainly wouldn't mind if a regular poster told me that there were a dozen cars just like the one I was considering for half the asking price. Or if they pointed out that the brand new price on the refrigerator was less than the asking price on the used one.

I seriously would not expect the forum members to try to cheat the new immigrants. But on the other hand, anyone can join this forum and post. So ads in the classifieds might not have been posted by forum regulars. Most of us are aware of the Gringo Tax. Some newbies might not be. So warnings or comments on price don't seem to be out of line to me.

So what exactly are you saying? That rune had a good point about being able to get a used bicycle for a lot less? But you notice that he did not say that it was a tandem. I believe that g&j are gringos so hopefully they won't apply any gringo tax.

Humberto has pointed out that not all bicycles are equal. :) Some are cheap (and rightly so), while others are more expensive. I saw a few really expensive bicycles at the Oxford Bicycle store here in Temuco. I didn't see any tandems though.

g~j have absolutely no intention to rip off anyone - gringo or chileno.
g~ once owned a bike shop and has ridden good quality bikes all his life.
Unfortunately - the great majority of folks out there know very little about "quality"
Undoubtedly... anyone, in any country, can walk into a bike store and buy a Cheap Piece of Crap.
g~ made much more money in his old bike shop fixing Cheap Pieces of Crap...
Than he ever did selling good quality bikes.
Go figure!
The old adage remains true... Ya get what ya pay for
We paid $2500 for this bike in Canada...
It has a recent new drive train ($250)
It comes with a cargo box to ship anywhere in the country or world ($350)
The "value" of this bike w/crate started at over $3000.
We are asking $1400 - so cheapskates need not apply.
Those who understand and recognize quality may think about it?
BTW... we can guesstimate that to buy a comparable package (new) in Chile...
(i.e. importing an American hand-built frame)
Could probably now run about $4000 +++
So sure... there are way cheaper bikes (...i.e. for one person)...
There are even cheaper cars...
But... remember the old g~j saying... ("C.P. of C.")
So we will restate our intention...
To sell this fine machine to a couple interested in a healthy and active lifestyle.
For potential use - for the rest of their lives - anywhere they may choose to live.
We still await any serious inquiries.
