Best and worst ethnic food in Chile

Postby Gringo Pillo » Sat Nov 06, 2010 5:42 pm

I know much has been discussed about chilean food and the taste of it.

However Chile is "famous" for its ethnic restaurants as well.

So.... what are your best and worst experiences?

Chinese food here in general has been quite terrible. There is a new restaurant here in LA where the food was really good at first. However I dont know what happen now. Not taste.. nothing!!

Is there a GOOD ITALIAN pizzeria here?? I ordered a quattro stagioni pizza in a so called good pizzeria and they brought me a pizza with the topping mixed. They have a wooden heated oven but inspite of this the pizza was missing taste.
Where can I eat REAL GOOD BRAZILIAN, CHINESE or ITALIAN food in Chile???????

For Brazilian food, if you make it to Santiago, I would recommend Muqueca. The address is Miguel Claro 2109, Providencia.

Thanks. Will try it!

I realised in my first comment that I was sterotyping countries. Would be the same if somebodey asked me where can eat best European food. All countries have many varieties and what is sold abroad in ethnic restaurants doesnt necessarliy mean that the food is what you have tasted.

But when thinking of the many pizzerias here that sell pizza baked on a pre cooked base bought form the local supermarket......

First you must find a chef who is not chilean. Foreign chefs/cooks/restaurant owners seem to provide a better eating experience. Not universally true, but often a good indicator. As someone once said, in Chile they have all the food ingredients, but nobody knows what to do with them.

I think is a bit too much to say that not know what to do with the ingredients. I like many chilean dishes but the problem is when start to make ethnic food. But is normal in nearly all countries. One exception I have to mention is the spicy version of KFC in Thailand. That is much better than the original. (KFC is ethnic American food?)

In NZ, we have a extremely multi cultural population... therefore we have nearly every type of food you can think of usually cooked by a person from the country of origin,

when we go to a french, italian, thai, chinese, indian, mexican, spanish, american, english restaurant, it takes authentic, its made how it would be made in that country,
there is a noticeable difference between the flavours, and how it is presented to you,

When you go to any of the above mentioned styles of food in chile, they have been modified to the chilean taste bud, the hotness and the flavour of the food is removed, usually replaced with Salt and sugar, and cheap alternative ingredients, it is made "bland"... (chinese is a great example)

as for Chilean food as ethnic food, it is one of the more boring foods i think i have tasted, its fine for a day to day meal, but there is nothing special about it....

KFC is almost considered junk food in the US, at least by many people.

Perhaps you don't have good friends among locals. Remember the saying "In Rome do as the Romans".

We do have good friends among the natives, and that is why they often take us to a Peruvian restaurant.
