My husband works for a Chilean company, so maybe that is why they didn't ask. He still has an account in the UK, though. Not sure what you mean re: credit card, I haven't heard of cuenta rut. We have a Mastercard and the debit card is redcompra. Is that what you meant?

Cuenta rut is the most basic account that the banks have to provide with absolutely no way of getting credit, i.e cheque books or credit cards....

People who work for a company here and are introduced to their bank by their employer have no problems with accounts.... (i have a full account with BCI)

foreigners who try to get an account on their own, it comes down to luck of the draw, nothing more

people post things saying "BUT I GOT A CUENTA RUT", will yes you did, you were lucky... i have applied twice of one by online and in the bank just to test the theory... woops banco estado just lost my paper work.. in otherwords the person who was processing it on the day put it int he too hard basket luck of the draw, if you want to you can keep annoying them until they give it to you ask for the jefe!, but there is a point where people just give up!

Hi maxine, thanks for answering my question. As for the credit card, you did say "...credit and bank card already in the pack." Your credit card is MasterCard.

Since your husband is working for a Chilean company, that makes it much easier. If he wasn't earning money in Chile, then they would have asked for bank statements from his account in the UK, etc.

As zerOnz just said, they don't issue credit cards with a cuenta rut account. Ask five different people in the bank and get five different answers. Luck of the draw. :)

There is no charge for paying via RedCompra. There is a 300 peso charge for each ATM withdrawal and a 600 peso charge for a caja live person withdrawal. The account works fine as a deposit payment account or transfer payment account from other Chile banks and as a validated account linked to one's MercadoPago and Dineromail accounts.

But isn't that what I just said?

Yes you did. :) Thanks for the info. You get a debit card with the account. All the debit cards whether it is for a cuenta rut account or a full account like maxine's husband has, are RedCompra cards.

If you are in or near Santiago, try the Scotiabank opposite the Lider grocery store on El Rodeo in La Dehesa. It is a bilingual (English and Spanish) branch and any of the account ejecutivos should be able to bring you up to speed on what they can offer you. We do not have a Chilean income and yet have no problems having money transferred in to this bank from our unrelated bank in Canada from time to time to keep us going. We have a checking account and debit and credit cards as Maxine has described. So far we have been happy with them (4 years) but I understand that emails to them from prospective clients are often not answered ... so I highly recommend that if you seriously are interested, you go there in person.

One of the requirements for this RUT account is to have a cedula which I do not have for the moment, has anybody else been able to open this type of account without a cedula?, I've been traveling back and forth to chile for the past year and a half, I own a line of natural supplements (LINK REMOVED) I don't have a "job" in chile, I don't really need one, I am in the process of getting approval from seremi for 2 of my products, I just want to give a bank here my money for them to hold and invest if they need to and let me withdraw money from time to time, I don't find it wise carrying amounts of cash in dollars or pesos, I do not understand why is this such a huge issue in this country, Judging from the headache of dealing with the seremi I guess everything in this country is just a big mess, I was told I needed a rut now I have a rut and I've called several banks and now I need a cedula, a contrato de trabajo, blah blah blah, btw hablo perfecto español , I pologize for venting on this forum but this is super frustrating.

How easy is it to have money wired from a Credit Union in the US to a bank in Chile. I'll be using my accounts in the US to supply my money in Chile. If this is not possible, what would be the best way to get this money down to Chile without going back and forth to the US?

Hi,

We just arrived in Santiago and are not familiar with the city yet. Where exactly is the Scotiabank located? Do you have the street address for this branch on El Rodeo? Is "La Dehesa" a searchable region within the city? Thanks a million!

I must say, emails from clients are often overlooked by our executive, however we DID get a bank account and credit card, so they are already ahead compared with other banks

It is opposite Urbano Espacio Shopping Centre on Av El Rodeo - next to Craighouse School. Turn left from Av La Dehesa onto El Rodeo, it is around 150m on the left hand side, before the first set of traffic lights. There is a drive through ATM in the car park, it's hard to miss.
