People sell the coin for the gold value at around $1,200 per. If a coin was minted at certain year, its selling value can be higher. A good lawyer can easily argue that carrying 4 such coins with face value of $200 is still within legal limit :-)

As far as taking it into customs is concerned, I'm wondering if there is any way to block it from showing up on the x-ray or if there is a good way to hide them if they do go through my stuff. I tried to research how gold would look under an x-ray without success. Do they just look like copper and alloy coins? Is there some clever way to obscure them while perhaps putting regular coins in the same area in case they try to search my bag? I'm also worried about getting through the baggage check in the States as I believe some of you can identify with.

Get a "passport wallet" - the kind you can carry round your neck
You know the kind... lots of pockets, zippers, pouches...
In goes...
1)- Paper stuff... passport, air tix, immunization record(?), different paper fiat money?
2)- Metal stuff + house or car keys, assorted coins (quarters, nickels, dimes) +
Above harmless, ordinary metal stuff is camo for your <{[(1/10, 1/4, 1/2, 1oz Au.)]}>
Hmmm... assuming you don't put knives or scissors in there?
No bozo gestapo will EVER sweat a small pile of keys/coins in a document holder.
All coins look alike to an airport x-ray.
Give NO reason for them to look inside.
Psssttt - don't be nervous, dude - the "behavioral facial interpreter~specialists" are watching YOU
But, they've got bigger fish to hook and fry than you.
Put the cleared pouch back on your neck... tuck it in your shirt... walk away.
AND... Make sure ya gotta VERY GOOD stash place in your hostal, departmento, casa...?

Dude just stick them in your pockets when you get off the plane. The x-ray machines when you arrive at SCL are for luggage only. If you have them in you pocket they won't find them. You don't even have to take off your jacket... luggage only. Basically Chilian customs should be the last of your worries.

If you are worried about the US airport get a change purse get a few Canadian toonies and loonies from the bank and toss them in there with your gold coins. It will pass through the x ray machine and the operator won't even blink at it.

You are worrying way too much about this.

We have had a lots of clients bring Gold coins in to the country. The declared value is the face value, but they must be coins issued by a country not some mint. For example, American eagles. Otherwise they are taxed as luxury goods (yes, bars can get taxed as a luxury item).

If you hire a shipping company that specializes in transport of Gold, it will cost you. $4,000 will be drop in the bucket. I would say convert them all to Gold Coins and simply walk them in. People walk in with more cash than that everyday.

A different idea:

Rent a safe deposit box at a bank in the USA and prepay 4-5 years. Just leave your coins in the USA, when it is time to cash out, fly back, sell them, wire the money back to Chile.

You are worried about getting the coins into Chile. You should be worried about getting the coins stolen in Chile, where theft is the favorite national hobby and has no stigma attached to it.

So just to take this to the extreme, you could theoretically walk threw customs with 199 of the 1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins (face value $50 a piece) and not have to claim them because you are under the $10 000 limit?

Me thinks that is when a good lawyer will be needed.

My personal opinion is such an argument whether in North America or Chile is only for the (1) gutsy and (2) rich enough to have a legal team to win the argument.

I personally would always go with the current spot price and premium for whatever I'm carrying IF IT EVER GOES THAT FAR.

I agree. Get yourself a travel vest like this: http://p1n.us/travelvest and you can just stick them in one of the many pockets as you go through. No problem.

I got a vest like that made by Eddie Bauer back in 2005 at a thrift shop in Tacoma for a couple of bucks and I wear it whenever I travel by air. Combined with the Khaki BDUs I wear, it's like traveling with an extra carryon. Pretty good when you travel budget airlines that only let you have 20 kg checked and 7 kg carryon, but they don't wiegh your jacket or pants.

Anyways, the vest's got two huge inner pockets that could easily carry a several rolls of silver coins each. $4000 in all silver would be 200 silver dollars. Looking at the silver dollars I have, you could carry them all and then some in the jacket. Heck it's got a pocket big enough for me to put a 10 inch netbook and power cord in.
