Possible to rent cell phone temporarily?

Postby bones » Thu Aug 26, 2010 6:36 pm

I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for using search - I'm wondering if it's possible to rent cell phones in Chile for a month let's say and be able to make international calls.

This would be for my work and a backup plan if my IP phone doesn't work when I'm down there. So I would need either an unlimited minute plan (if such a thing exists) or at least a decent per-minute rate.

Unfortunately I don't have a phone that's GSM or able to convert to GSM.

Any other ideas welcome. Basically I just need to be able to call from Chile to a conference line to the U.S. My company will pay for the charges, but I don't want it to be anything too ridiculous.

I was even considering just stocking up on calling cards - if they sell ones that have lots of minutes on them, and using a landline. Like I said - suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

its $US 20 for the cheapest phone in chile.....

Welcome to the land of Internet based calling, every business i have been to in chile uses gtalk or skype or ip phones to funcion.......

as long as you can call the conference phone in the usa on yoru IP phone you will be able to here.....

could always use the new google internet to land line service, or even skype internet to land line....

Thanks. Skype is an idea, but sometimes unreliable.

I basically need to convince my boss that I'll be connected and okay in Chile, and that I'll be able to do all the conference calls I need - so really I'm building an argument as well!

Any more thoughts appreciated.

In Santiago you cab get a phone on a prepay basis (no contract) very cheaply from any phone shop or department store.
They will set it up for you and give you the necessary codes for your calls and you're in business.
I call South Africa often and a 5000 pesos card will give me about 10 to 15 minutes. Not cheap but affordable.
There are other packages available for overseas calls but I haven't tried them. Apparently cheaper. Ask when you buy the phone.
Hope that's some help.
