Explain to this doofus, please.

I think he is implying (tongue in cheek, I assume) that a bunch of people would get themselves trapped down there for 5 million pesos and a job offer...

Even though the miners have undoubtedly lost a significant amount of weight, Chilean officials are trying to ensure they don't bulk up before their rescue. They say the miners will have to be no more than 35 inches (90 centimeters) around the waist to make it out of the tunnel.

The escape tunnel will be about 26 inches (66 centimeters) wide — the diameter of a typical bike tire — and stretch for more than 2,200 feet (688 meters) through solid rock. That's more than 80 inches (207 centimeters) in circumference, but rescuers also have to account for the space of the basket that will be used to pull the miners to safety.

Great news for the families and an amazing story on so many levels. Watching the genuine emotion of Piñera on that video clip is inspiring, and it contrasts sharply with the douchebag, tele-prompter reading, weasel we have as our "leader" up here.

AMEN!

The international media is going nuts with this one on all channels and papers except for Fox (they still think Chile is just a dish served in Texas).

To have the whole country step-up from top to bottom for 33 miners is something to see.

In between all the drilling drama and concerns for safe rescue...
There exist other perversely personal dramas...
To wit...

Chilean Miner’s Wife, Mistress Waiting Together for Him to Surface

Ever since it was discovered that the 33 men who were trapped by the mine collapse in Chile were actually alive, we've pretty much known there was going to be a movie made out of their story. The question was, what kind of movie? Would it be a movie of grim semi-salvation, like Alive, where only a few people get eaten? Would it be truly dark, like United 93, with flickers of hope and human triumph but a gruesomely blunt ending? Or would it be an out-and-out, Seabiscuit-style feel-good movie of the year? Well, it turns out it may not be any of those things. The Post reports today that while waiting for trapped miner Yonni Barrios, his wife Marta Salinas made an unpleasant discovery: Barrios's mistress, Susanna Valanzuela, was also hanging around the mine site waiting to see her man, the same man, surface. "This woman has no legitimacy!" hissed Salinas. "We are in love!" replied Valenzuela. "I'll wait for him!"

See? We were way off. Clearly it's going to be a movie starring Kate Hudson and Kristin Bell, with Mark Ruffalo playing the hapless miner who goes from praying he escapes the mine to hoping that he never, ever has to emerge from it.

I guess he is, what is the literal phrase? "IN DEEP".

One day I was living the traditional Chilean male lifestyle, then that damn mine had to collapse with me in it :!:

And the drama deepens...
Gossip-mongers are looking more closely now...
Qui bono... checks are in the mail...
Seems like some lawyers will soon be happy

If those 33 trapped Chilean miners make it to the surface safely, some of them may end up wishing they'd stayed underground. Officials at the camp where families have gathered say at least five miners' wives have encountered surprise mistresses. Ugly scenes have ensued as women clash over compensation packages, the Telegraph reports.

One miner has a first wife he never divorced, a live-in partner, a mother of a child he had several years ago, and a woman who says she is his current girlfriend. All are holding vigil at the camp. "It's a logistical nightmare trying to keep them apart—and of course they all want to send messages," said a Red Cross worker. Officials are considering asking the miners whom they would like to claim the compensation, although they are trying to avoid raising the men's stress levels by letting them know too much about the dramas happening above ground.

Just saw an update on FOX. Clayton Morris read a short story against a backdrop of the mine and a mining machine. Not the first time. I do not go online to read their stories, however.
