Regarding "Google Books"

Postby RuneTheChookcha » Sun Aug 15, 2010 2:13 pm

Rune is reading a book now, and wants a copy, you know.

He uses Firefox, and while any page is open (on books.google.com), he does the following:

1. click tools > page info > media

2. in the address window scroll down the list of all images, using the down-arrow key, until the page image is visible in the media preview window

3. click save as and save as a ".PNG" file

Now the book page that is currently open is saved entirely.

But Rune...
This is only one page
You may download the entire book, you know...

Google Book Downloader 2.2.1
Note : Only works with Firefox.
Required Greasemonkey add-on.
To Install : Google Book Downloader
1st - Greasemonkey https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748/
2nd - Google Book Downloader http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/37933

View a book.
Example : edited at the request of Rune :D
http://books.google.com/books?id=mLFWPw ... CCgQ6AEwAA
In the left panel, click Download this book

How to save book
Install FlashGot add-on for Firefox and FlashGet
Select all pages, right-click, choose FlashGot Selection
Press OK to start downloading. Note : Download only one page at a time, or your IP will be banned
After the downloading is finished, in FlashGet, left panel, choose Downloaded folder.
Select all pages of the book, right-click, choose Rename -> Comment As Filename
Read book :D

BTW... this cannot work yet with Firefox 4.0b3
g~j are currently using this beta...
You must revert to the last full Firefox Ver. 3.6

And you must also remember this...
Many of the books you can preview on Google Books are still in copyright, and are displayed with the permission of publishers and authors. You can browse these "limited preview" titles just as you would in a bookstore, but you won't be able to see more pages than the copyright holder has made available.
When you've accessed the maximum number of pages allowed for a book, any remaining pages will be omitted from your preview. You can order full copies of any book using the "Get this book" links to the side of the preview page.

So of course, older books which have expired copyrights should be available as whole books...
Other than that... they (Google  ) want your money... :P

Thanks!.. Though, I am quite happy without these, at the moment. With just a couple of finger movements, using rather sensitive touch-pad, it is not that difficult to simply "save as". The pages appear to be quite small in size, easily readable, and accurate. :)

Rune... this is a good example also... :)
But only the first 100 pages :(
This "teaser" to make you buy a $54 book...
That is close to 30mil pesos...
How many litros can you get for that

Certain Google books (I don't mean with "expired" copyright) are provided fully, and are also downloadable, as PDF files, right from Google. Link to them is titled "Full view", rather than "Preview". Though, this is quite rare thing. I didn't know about it before.

As it is kindly posted on: http://www.aboutonlinetips.com/google-books-downloader/

"... Download book without using any Tool

1. Open computer with admin privileges and launch your Internet Explorer (Not Firefox). Now visit to the page in books.google.com that you want to download.
2. Navigate to "C:\Documents and Settings\%admin_name%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\" of your computer machine and delete all of the content of the folder.
3. Browse the pages of the books that you want to download.
4. Open "Temporary Internet Files" folder. Copy all PNG files. These files are nothing but the pages of the scanned book
5. You can print the png files and arrange them in order for reading ..."

It must be further noted, that using Firefox gives me not the same set of pages available on Google, than when I use the IE.

Thus, using the combination of both, plus deleting all cookies, plus changing my IP address (by disconnecting/re-connecting), it is possible to read/save a bit more pages than using only one of them (Firefox or IE).
