My wife and I live in an upmarket apartment building in Vina and our neighbours are amazed that we don't have a nana to clean and cook for us.

Another humorous anecdote:
A maestro showed up one morning to take measurements for a wooden desk file my wife wanted and saw me making up the bed in the master bedroom. He was flabergasted at what he saw and was literally shaking with laughter. I asked him what was so funny and he said that Chilenos were too macho to do housework. We both had a chuckle and then I opened a bottle of wine and we toasted each other's cultures.

yeah sure... , I would just replace the word 'macho' by mamon :D
Probably the maestro's age was >=40.

The younger generations are slightly less mamones and it is not that uncommon anymore to have a husband that cooks or does the dishes or changes the diapers

Watch Masterpiece Theatre or anything about England in the mid to late 1800's and you will understand the stratification of Chilean society.

Read some Jane Austen or either of the Bronte sisters. It's probably the most incredibly boring era in the history of literature, but it'll give you a pretty good idea what they're talking about.

*makes a note that she doesn't live in Chile yet and that the OP probably isn't looking for a place to live anymore, but is posting anyways* My ex's family lives in Macul and they really like it, they have quite a big yard, but then they have two terrains in one as his grandfather built that house back in the early 80's. My ex has said it's a nice area, but it can be on the pricey side.

I'm from the other side of town
Out of bounds
To anybody who don't live around
I never learned to share
Or how to care
I never had no teachings
About being fair

Depression is part of my mind
The sun never shines
On the other side of town
The need here is always for more
There's nothing good in store
On the other side of town
I'm just another ten percenter, My mind is like an ocean.

Yes, but I think the thread's been helpful for lots of people so far :)
I'm not a fan of cities but need to be in Santiago for now, so I preferred to move to a suburb - glad I found a place in a nice area, since el centro is a bit chaotic with the student protests at mo
