Hi all!

I'm just wondering if anyone can share their experiences or provide more info on bringing pet birds to Chile? I have 4 parrots and I can't find much information with regards to specialised vets, food and supplies for birds etc. I've gotten tons of info on bringing them to Chile, but would love to hear more. Thanks!

We brought a cockatiel plus 2 canaries with us from the US with no problems whatsoever. You say you already have a load of info on how to actually go about it so I wont go into that. Suffice to say that we did it ourselves as the procedure is very simple. If you put seed in the cage when they travel, you´ll be asked to dump it on arrival, but that´s all and obviously if you tarvel on the same flight you wont be allowed to take any seed in either.

Thanks for that! I've had canaries before, such lovely birds! How was the quarantine for your birds? That's the only part I don't like - I thought it may be like Canada where they only have to do house quarantine. Did they stay the full 30 days in quarantine?

Nobody mentioned quarantine when they arrived. I just picked them of the belt , showed them to SAG and left the airport with them. This was bout 11 years ago, so don´t know if rules have changed. If I recall correctly I had to bring a health cert from a vet but that was all.

Been away being the adminator, moving sucks! So you had no quarantine for your birds??? I wish I was so lucky! I'm going to put this here in case anyone else wants info on taking pet birds (especially parrots) to Chile -
my birds have to have a CITES permit (takes 8 weeks to get), a vet health certificate, stamped by the official sate vet, they have to have all sorts of blood tests done and parasitic treatments while in quarantine here for 30 days before I take them with me, a final vet check up 10 days before leaving, and then they have to go to quarantine with the SAG n Chile for 30 days upon arrival.....man! Not to mention the cost. These are clean healthy pets, not wild animals! But what are you going to do? Either all that or leave them behind =( pet transportation really needs to get re-worked for pets...

Wow, sad news Catt. Things have obviously changed since I arrived

I forgot to add....I have no idea why, and it seems excessive and unnecessary since they test the birds while in quarantine in Chile anyway, and charge you for it.....but Chile asks that birds be tested for Avian influenza and Newcastle disease. In Canada at least, very few places do these tests. Most have to send it to some lab in the USA. This can take several weeks (up to 6 weeks). Yet it must be done within the 30 days before they travel...common sense has been completely abandoned here. Also, do they think parrot owners are made of money??? These tests are far from cheap! So so stupid! Because of all this nonsense I may have to leave my healthy clean parasite-free lovely birds that are like my kids behind.....maybe I won't move! sorry, I really needed to vent!
