Bring money to buy apartment

Postby LET » Thu Mar 18, 2010 8:45 pm

I arrived to Santiago this week and are intrested to buy an apartment together with my chilean girlfrind.
My question is if there is any tax to pay if bringing in money to Chile. The seller was talking about that, but did not know for sure. Its a new apartment that we want to buy.
What happens if I take cash with me to Chile, over $10.000 and declare the amount that I bring with me?
Will be happy for advises.

I believe most have set up simple checking accounts here to receive a wire. Then from there they do the transaction. I am not aware of a tax, that doesn't mean there isnt one though. You will have fees for wiring the cash, though (obviously). I don't think coming into the country with +10k USD in cash is a very good idea.

Buying an apartment is fairly simple. Wiring the money in is even relatively simple. Opening a checking account without residency is never simple.

yes, you can simply walk a suitcase full of cash in to the country, but you still must complete the money laundering compliance paperwork at the airport.

Better is to have your attorney properly draft promissory agreements and contracts, then wire the money to the seller. You still need to do the money laundering compliance paperwork (i.e. prove where the money comes from and where it is going).

There is no legal issue with moving money, as long as it is declared.

It's extraordinarily dangerous to carry large amounts of cash. You risk being robbed at so many different stages of the journey. You can't get through the airports and customs without someone knowing that you have cash. Heck, you can't get out of your own bank without someone knowing that you have large amounts of cash.

Just wire the money. It's a lot safer.

Have you ever watched the TV show Jackass? Just because you were stupid and lucky, doesn't mean that your luck will transfer (along with the stupidity). 8)
