Buying Gold Coins in Chile

Postby EVERFREE on Thu Mar 18, 2010 7:30 pm

Are gold and silver coins easy to come by in Chile? Are there dealers you can go to or that will ship to you within Chile? What about ordering from companies outside the country and having it shipped to you in Chile?

Then can I at least get some decent threads to replace the motheaten ones?

I'd like to know that too. I didn't have much luck finding a coin shop as I know it. But then I didn't venture very far east to cuico-landia or do an intensive search either. Anyone know a good coin shop in Stgo.? I tried to sell some Mexican Angels (silver) at a Joyeria and I got blank stares mostly. They wanted jewelry only.

There have been a lot of behind the scenes discussion not to mention past public threads (moth eaten or not, NOT) on the subject.

If you want info, you must all agree to share any information on:

(1) Your specific experiences with the cambios in Providencia and other east Santiago parts that deal with the 100 peso gold Chile semi-numismatic coin and if they also on request deal with the standard world recognized gold coins.

(2) Any info on other cambios outside of Santiago, if any, that deal with the above.

Advanced search is your friend, not your enemy.

I have done numerous searches on a variety of topics. I find that it is very time consuming and rarely do I find the answer to what I need. In order to search, you have to guess what words might be in the threads. Then the threads that come up are filled with pages of irrelevant comments because that's what a lot of people on forums post, as the responses to my questions show.

Also when I search I can't even go to the threads because I keep getting an error, "Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete."

It's a pretty simple question. I'll try searching google and see what I can find out... maybe someone out there in cyberspace has written something about whether or not you can acquire gold inside Chile.

There is a new service that sells gold in Chile. I just received an email on it. It is run as a collaborative effort between Robert Kiyosaki of the book "Rich Dad Poor Dad" etc.. One of his "Rich Dad" advisors is Micahael Maloney. They are now selling gold/silver to 32 countries, including Argentina and Chile. You can investigate what they say by using the url (i can't post links) on the web with the words goldsilverchile. Your link will be redirected and on that page you'll find a link to the specifics.

I haven't looked into this service myself I just happen to be on their mailing list. Best of luck.

Holy moly. Talk about a setup for an armed robbery.

And how did they circumvent Chilean law regarding the prohibition of courier or mail shipments of bullion?

"... Man decides that gold is valuable because it is rare and enduring and brilliant. He then thinks that if he possesses gold he, himself, will become rare or unique, that his individual worth will endure, and that he also will be considered a rather brilliant fellow. So obsessed he may become with these foolish notions that in trying to obtain gold, he will destroy the very life he is trying to embellish ..."

Don't know about the law, From their website:

Chile
Shipping, Handling & Insurance Customs, Taxes Or Fees (Responsibility of Purchaser)
100 oz Silver $130.00*
500 oz Silver $325.00*
10 oz Gold $170.00*

*Shipping may vary with metal type and quantity

Maximum Delivery Per Address Per Day: $50,000.00
Silver (legal tender .999): 19.00%
Silver Rounds & Bars: 19.00%
Gold 19.00%

Perhaps the 19% import duty is something new?

The 19% is standard Chile import duty. What MAY HAVE CHANGED was the previous restriction on the transport of precious metal bullion via courier and mail. This is good news if true.

For an expat, this means one may not have to travel in person to a free trading financial center for selling though it would still be a good idea anyways from a privacy and security standpoint.

The other implication is that Chilean law apparently does not consider bullion coins a monetary instrument.
