Christian Churches in Chile

Postby EVERFREE » Wed Mar 17, 2010 1:58 am

I am looking for Christian churches, independent Baptist, non-denominational or other protestant churches. I'd like to be able to contact them before I come to Chile. Web links would be a great help, but names and telephone numbers will help too. If there are any other Christians on the forum who are making plans to move to Chile I'd love to know who you are.

Chile is a big place! Are you seriously asking for someone to give you a list and phone numbers of all the Christian churches in Chile. I am sure you can use the online yellow pages all by yourself.

Virtually every street has one. You do realise that Catholics are Christians, no? Good luck with contacting all the churches, how many decades of free time do you have?

Evangelical Protestant-type churches are scattered about in the poblaciones and have found roots among the Chilean working and middle classes.

I'm agnostic, but there's an Protestant church in Vina with services in English, one on Cerro Concepcion too, I think in Valpo. No shortage of churches in Chile!

Thanks for the responses everyone... I didn't mean to imply I was looking for a list of all of them. I'll probably contact two or three of them until I can find a friend who speaks English that I can go to church with when I get there.

helibel, thanks for the link to the yellow pages... that will be very useful for looking up a lot of things.

Religion facts from Wikipedia:

In the most recent census (2002), 70 percent of the population over age 14 identified as Roman Catholic and 15.1 percent as evangelical. In the census, the term "evangelical" referred to all non-Catholic Christian churches with the exception of the Orthodox Church (Greek, Persian, Serbian, Ukrainian, and Armenian), the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), Seventh-day Adventists, and Jehovah's Witnesses. Approximately 90 percent of evangelicals are Pentecostal. Wesleyan, Lutheran, Reformed Evangelical, Presbyterian, Anglican, Episcopalian, Baptist, and Methodist churches are also present. Irreligious people, atheists and agnostics, account for around 8% of the population.

What the census does not mention is the amount of people who 'say' they are Catholics but don't really believe it. There is a lot of pressure from society to be seen as a Catholic - like a status symbol - and people are in denial about what they really feel. Those are the ones that go to mass only for X-mas and Easter, so don't be fooled.
