Oh, Gary, Gary...Please see this thread for all kinds of information (both good & bad) about flying with dogs into Chile. http://www.allchile.net/chileforum/topic2312.html

We brought in 3 dogs and a cat, but we came from Mexico and we used a pet transport agency to coordinate all the papers & help us with transport, so our experience isn't like yours will be. Our pets were on the same plane(s) as we were, but were not allowed in the cabin. It was almost a disaster because one dog kennel was declared "too big" by the airline in Mexico City (though no fault of pet transport agency's, in fact they saved the day). What you will find here at AllChile is mostly personal experiences and good tips, but you need to do your homework and be prepared. So check your airline's regulations (very important) and the Aphis regulations (there's a link in the thread), and have all your doggie's papers in order. Wishing you luck!

Yes, your dog needs vaccinations, dewormimg, pest control, and health papers to travel. Both Chile and the airlines will require health papers.

You get the forms for Chile from your USDA veterinarian. Your own vet does the work and fills them out. Then they get sent back to the USDA vet to be stamped. There will be a time frame that the shipping papers are valid. Time period for the airlines and for Chile might be different.

As far as I know, ther is no airline which will allow you take your dog in cabin on a flight to South America. If you find an airline that will allow it, please let us know.

Pay attention to the vaccination requirements. They have a time frame and the dog's shots must fit that time frame.

Also pay attention to the requirements for crate size on international flights. The crate required is huge to the point of being dangerous to the dog. The dog has no way to brace itself during turbulance and can be injured by being tossed around. But the airlines will turn the dog away if you try to ship in a smaller crate.

Greetings from La Serena-
I just brought (4 months ago) my two cats with me here from the States. You *do need paperwork from the Vet and from the Ag department- it takes a few weeks to get - google caps below as I have lost the link, but it explains everything. Lan Chile got us safely from LA to Santiago on one flight. I did not want to put the cats through more than one flight so do check how many stops there is. If you tell the rep you are worried they will help you. My gatos got here safe and sound although they hate the food. I brought some with us but it was taken away at customs, there are strict agricultural requirements here. Sandra

I just brought my 2.5 year old dog from San Francisco, CA to Santiago, Chile. Although I had my dog fly as cargo with me on American Airlines, I worked with a company called Pet Express (LINK REMOVED) that helped guide me through all of the paperwork. Getting into Chile with my dog was pretty easy, but I was very very organized with all of the paperwork. If you would like feel free to private message me and I'd be happy to answer any questions!

Heard that last week they passed a law which states that owners of dogs are now responsible for damage caused by their dogs. I thought that this was obvious.
