Based on the stiff $500 fine for herbal tea reported on another thread:
Before going through Chile Aduanas (Customs), make sure you mark SÍ/YES on the line asking about any products of plant or animal origin. This includes things like a wood carving key chain, the packet of jam you decided not to use for your airline breakfast meal, candy and even processed and sealed canned, backpacking and MRE-type foods.
By marking SÍ/YES, the worst that will happen is confiscation as decided by the Aduanas/SAG (agriculture) screeners.

Good advice. That's what I usually do, but my friend didn't and was fined $200 for a bag of nuts. My aging parents-in-law were let off with an apple they didn't realize they had, but that was lucky...
