The frequency isn't as important as the voltage. Pump motors designed for 50 cycles will probably run just fine on 60 cycles. Japan, for example, is 50 cycles on one side of the archipelago and 60 cycles on the other side. IIRC, some household generators can be switched to produce 110 volts or 220 volts. But we are still talking about a bigger load than the household generator can handle.

There are household reverse osmosis units. Maybe someone could package one with a pump with motor and the generator and make enough to help some people.
Household bleach can purify water to the point of safety, too. Doesn't taste good, but it kills the bugs.
