OregonWoodsmoke has a good idea. One thought though. The USA uses 60 cycle power. Most foreign countries use 50 cycle power. The generator must provide power compatable with the intended load.

Sorry, sorry sorry...it is a 2.5 as someone mentioned above. I was so hoping it might be useful for water purification.

What somebody with pull needs to do is get a nuclear powered sub or aircraft carrier down there. They produce drinking water from the sea day and night. No lack of power, either.
Good luck to all of you in Chile. It's going to be a long recovery.

The frequency isn't as important as the voltage. Pump motors designed for 50 cycles will probably run just fine on 60 cycles. Japan, for example, is 50 cycles on one side of the archipelago and 60 cycles on the other side. IIRC, some household generators can be switched to produce 110 volts or 220 volts. But we are still talking about a bigger load than the household generator can handle.

Vicki, no cry. You have a good heart. I'll bet your gen set would be very welcome somewhere.

There are household reverse osmosis units. Maybe someone could package one with a pump with motor and the generator and make enough to help some people.

Household bleach can purify water to the point of safety, too. Doesn't taste good, but it kills the bugs.

The more i think about it, bleach might be the most effective water treatment available.

Unfortunately, even bleach wont kill the cryptosporidium oocysts as they are highly resistant to chlorine and cause terrible diarrhoea. We aren't even sure that the water purification systems on subs would be able to produce the same amount of clean water as this Siemens system that we have because they aren't required to deal with such large amounts of people, only the crew on baord at the time. We hope that we have some good news soon and will keepyou all updated.

Yeah, Maxine, you are right. I forgot about them little beggars. Still, it should kill things like cholera.

Just to let you know we got the generator and the water purification system is on its way to the people who need it. Thanks for your replies and advice/suggestions and Vicki and Greg - your generator may not have been big enough, but your hearts were so thank you for the offer.
I've attached a link to the article. Not sure if I'm allowed as I'm not good with all the things I'm allowed to post or not so it may not be included but if it is - take a look.
