Another USA focussed electronic payment vendor is Amazon Payments. I'm sure a large majority of USA based persons have an Amazon account and thus an Amazon Payment would be quite easy to make and they don't have the reputation of freezing your account like PayPal for whatever reason.

The team is ground in Los Angeles for the night. Message from Charles: "We did get a lot of aid delivery today, but the storm has been chasing us all day. We got lots of recon done today as well. One aborted trip to isla Mocha do to weather."

I think it is...this is from Charles on page 7..also ....see below, some fees are suspended

I have issued refunds to everyone that donated through pay pal. Please make sure they give you your money back (nothing pleasant to say about them right now).

Our quickest and fastest way to handle this is to send money through Western Union:

1. Send by Western Union funds to the following recipient by either credit card online at the Western Union site, Phone, or through a Western Union office near you using "Money in Minutes" service http://www.westernunion.com/ :

Money in Minutes

I will then pick it up at the Western Union office on Monday Morning as they are closed Sunday (I will check late this Saturday afternoon too). We have sufficient funds in Chile until about Wednesday at least for fuel and related expenses. Western Union will solve several problems, as Pay Pal was charging up to 1-3% anyway, and was not going to release the funds at least for another couple weeks if ever (again I was paying this out my own piggy bank in the meantime until those funds cleared) .

Anyone that wishes to send an amount over $1,000 please PM me, and I may have some alternative methods that could reduce cost.

Update from the Team
Just spoke to Charles - as you know, they are grounded in Los Angeles. They are in the hotel - they had curfew starting at 9pm. The curfew is lifted at 6am. They will head back to Temuco as soon as the curfew is lifted and start their missions for the day. They have a lot of pictures and Charles told me he has a lot of stories and accounts of what he has seen today first hand. Tomorrow they will try to get to Isla Mocha again. Fingers crossed that the weather will hold up.

P.S. to my last post...maybe if kids who are unaffected want to help they can put a small plan into action....many children affected by this type of disaster have lasting fears and memories...it would be good for them to have drawing books and crayons with which to record what they felt and how people came to help....this is a type of therapy for young and old....a gallery of the pics could be set up later when things are on an even keel again.....this is a small way to help the kids recover from what they saw and heard amid the earthquake...and who knows there may be budding artists amongst them....prizes could be given by well wishers later.....G

I was about to transfer money via WU and before I clicked on the confirm button I noticed that they wanted to charge me US 20 !!!

I find that staggering. Is there something I'm missing? :shock:

Waiting for any ideas.

This is my first time using Western Union, but if I had to guess, it would be that you're sending from Australia. I just went through the steps to send money and am not being charged a fee. There was a note at the beginning saying "transactions to Chile are free today". The odd thing is that the only info they collected on who the money is being sent to was "Chile" "Charles Spencer" - there wasn't anywhere to input "Temuco" - this is for the 'Money in Minutes' online service.
I'm going to hold off on clicking the confirm button... perhaps someone else can verify that they've successfully sent to Charles via WU.

we are grounded by weather in Los Angeles (chile). we have to spend the night. Lots of damage here. will update from Temuco in the afternoon, as soon as we can take off.

The western union money I think just gets sent to the computer system in Chile. I go with my ID and it is released to me at any western union in the country. They use to ask for a specific city, but I suspect under the current circumstances they just have it targeted at the country.

First thing in the morning, I will be confirming that western uninion method is fully working.

See the first post about them eliminating the fees to Chile until the 19th of march. NO MORE PAY PAL!!!!!

I think Dagny is right, that I am being charged because I am sending the money from Australia - albeit through a credit card - so I really don't know how to send it to you. I tried re-sending the donation and once again they were charging me US 20.

I have another friend who is going to deposit into my own account so that I can send it all together in order to avoid further fees.

Sending money to Chile via Western Union from Australia can get very costly.. ie the more money u send the higher the fee is.. also WU will give you a lower exchange rate ie.. they are currently giving about 12 pesos less per AU dollar.. having said that.. like Admin has said the money arrives in a matter of minutes and can be collected by the person you have sent it to anywhere in Chile.. which is good in a situation like this.. unlike the banks they dont hold ur money for days/weeks/months..

Check the thread earlier - 4heid talks about collecting from friends via paypal and then sending (I'm guessing via WU) one lump sum to Charles. Perhaps you could send from Australia to US w/ 4heid and avoid the WU fees. Hate to advocate paypal - personally I'm doing what I can to cut them out of my financial life!
