Those are two of the on the ground well known reputable charities working in Chile.

There is also a big Chile Ayuda Chile telethon coming up. We will post more about this later, but it is the traditional way in Chile to raise aid after a disaster. My wife says she can remember participating in dozens of these in her life, and to her is at the core of the Chilean heart after national disasters in Chile.

Our guys are updating a list of organisations (national and international) and volunteer needs on The Pulse. I'll link to it when it's ready.

Hi,
My name is Rio and I'm a firefighter-EMT in the United States. For reasons too big to explain here there is an intimate connection between firefighters in the US and those in South America, and I am wondering how I may be able to help. Currently I am trying to see what sort of equipment or donations we can provide (aside from the usual money+food) because I think we are in a unique position to help local departments recover and start doing their job best.

I have now a hold of:
* my local fire department, which is willing to donate equipment
* a person in Chile who would possibly be able to coordinate

I now need (and am in the process of)
* a mover/international company who may be able to provide shipping

A little background on myself: I'm a volunteer nationally qualified firefighter/PA state EMT and also the administrator of Firefighter-EMT magazine.

One of the junior attorneys in our office, her father is a volunteer firefighter here in Temuco (all of them are in Chile, and very proud about it). In the morning, we will see what we can do about putting something together and contacting them. We are also working on the shipping situation, since many of the ports were smashed.

Very generous offer, and it is needed. Many of the fire departments simply no longer exist, but the volunteers are still out doing what they can with what they have.

Much appreciated. I got word that two departments here are willing to donate equipment as necessary. The one (of many) hurdles would be getting it there. I'll check back often here (should I make a new thread?)

I will create a new thread for this specifically in the morning. I need to do some forum reorganization to get this spread of information better under control in the morning, before it gets out of hand.

It's not much, but if anyone here is stranded in Santiago due to problems at the airport, I can offer my couch to sleep on.

We want to help. My son and I had planned a trip in March/April to look into relocating. I hadn't booked our flight yet when the earthquake struck. As soon as we can get into Temuco from the US we are willing and able to assist you in whatever we can. We plan to stay a month and are at your service.
