Anyone coming down to an area that has no power might think about bringing cordless tools and an INVERTER or two. These aren't so expensive anymore and run off a car battery. Getting one in the US to put out 220v is possible, I see them on E Bay all the time.
On the subject of warnings and tsunamis, what is the straight scoop on who said what and who decided not to pass the warning on? The govt is blaming the navy and vice versa. I know who I believe.

I just looked on E Bay US, they're available for under $200 for a 2000 watt one (shipping Worldwide, so that might work out here!).
I'm a big fan of "backfeeding" the house (with the main breaker off) of course in the event of an outage. Yes, you need to know what you're doing, there are risks to utility workers if you don't throw the main etc. usual disclaimer.
That being said, a car with an inverter hooked up to it will act as a generator for an economical house, allowing the fridge to stay cold and the lights to stay on.
I know I'll have one in my bag next time I come down...

(EDIT) I just looked on Mercadolibre, they have 1000watt inversors there for under 60 lukas, good luck getting one at this point though. I don't think a 1000 watt one will run (start) your fridge but it'll sure light the house.

Charles,
Dont stress my friend, it is sad but everyone must be strong. This network you have put together is phenomenal and one thing I have seen from the US is that the Chilean people are 1000x stronger than any government. The networks around the country of people, resources and technology have amazed me in their efficiency and those helped find our family.

My entire livelihood is based on Chile as our company's business is food exports from Chile alone, at least the part that I run and own, as its part of a larger distributor.

We are still looking to invest quickly in Chile and are trying to do so even faster if we can get funds quicker.

We met last week with the embassy in DC who is significantly interested in a project we are bringing to the region and will invest with the University system and CORFO in a great portion in this to bring employment and foreign investment to the country.
In fact, today, I receive an email them here that they are trying to get the new budget plan to get me down there asap to start looking at sites.

I have to say I have been most impressed with everything, even though the govt was delayed, the people, minus the flaites, are handling this extremely well and using all of their resources well.

Thanks everyone.

Yea, we had our land lines, cell phones, internet cut last night just after my last post. We are getting back up and running again this morning.

mbardeen, great to hear talca is online to some extent. I am going to check and see who we have on the missing list or other messages pending in to the area. Please collect cell and land line phone numbers in any areas you travel to. If you encounter anyone that needs to get messages out of the country, please collect those. We would be happy to pass them on.

Say, I just had a horrible thought last night as I was sitting in bed thinking about what more we could do. We are missing some long time forum members still, and some are in the really bad areas and have not signed on to the forum.

List of old Chile forum MIAs I know of right now:
cali_chile48 has not logged on since the quake. He just bought a house in that area and on the coast. I sent a PM. I think I have a cell phone number for him
EE is still MIA, has anyone had contact?
El Puelche I believe is up near Pucon right now.
There was a girl from sweden I think that was in concepcion just a day or two before the quake, and joined the forum asking about a place to meet foreigners.

Could a few of the old timers that know who is active and who is not on the forum check through the list of members, their last post, pm and email them, and collect them together so we can see about then finding phone numbers and other contact info to check on them. I feel so stupid for not having doing this earlier, there just was so much going on.

Hi all
Couple of communication pieces for you which are now on the pulse online:

1. Skype has confirmed their phone numbers in Chile have stopped working. They are "working on it"
2. The UK embassy seems to finally have their phone working but I'm acting as a go-between for UK citizens here if they can't get through. Drop me a line or call 96610206 if you can and need to get a message to them. Am aware there are some missing in Pichelemu.

Cheers
Terri

For all those that are wanting to donate or otherwise help from outside the country, we are checking on what in our international shipping chain is still functioning. We have a box in Miami, that under normal circumstances can ship by both air to chile in a couple days and pallets by ocean in a couple weeks.

A LOCAL TRAGEDY BRINGS LIFE INTO PERSPECTIVE
The first we heard of the massive earthquake that hit Chile two days ago was through messages of concern from friends in Japan. People in La Junta did not feel anything, yet the quake was felt as far away as Sao Paolo, Brazil - I guess we must be on a different fault line. The impact of the quake has been huge, but down here in Patagonia it all seems surreal - the sun is shining as its not done for six months - a week and more of full on clear beautiful blue skies and apparently another week more to come - everywhere seems even more peaceful than normal - and yet just north of here.... Two million people impacted by the quake - 12.5% of the population of Chile! Thank heaven that the death toll has not neared that of Haiti or Szechuan.

When I first went onto the internet to find out exactly what had happened I came across more than one or two comments obviously posted by people with a very Macho attitude. "Just 48 dead" one man wrote before going to explain how the world should not be concerned for Chileans as "we are used to these things and our buildings are built very strong". At the time I commented to Konomi "Just 48 dead! Obviously no one in this guys family was one of them otherwise he`d be whistling a different tune"

It`s the way of the world to count disaster in numbers, but people are not numbers and people who have died have family and friends and so even if its one, the disaster is huge if that one is close to you. This came home bigstyle just yesterday, for La Junta witnessed it`s own tragedy...

The sirens at the fire station sounded around lunch time for the first time since the bringing in of the New Year. We searched for smoke on the horizon but none could be found, then we made our way to the land to begin laying the foundation (finally) and at the bridge over the Rio Rosselot we encountered lots of La Juntans and tourists and police and firemen and a woman crying. The woman, known as `Tai Maria` for her role in helping raise the children of La Junta at the village nursery had lost her 18 year old son, her only child, who had just drowned while trying to swim across the river. Apparently there is no father to grieve with her and so her pain is all the more. As the toll rises across Chile it is important to remember that it is not the numbers that are important, its the story attached to all of those lives, that`s important.

Question for, I guess, Charles if he has time or other foristas in the know... how are wire transfers to bank accounts in Chile working at the moment? Are there significant delays? I'm specifically interested in a wire transfer to Banco del Estado in Valdivia, which normally takes 3-4 business days. Thanks in advance for any info.
You are disturbing me. I am picking mushrooms.

Hi Charles:
We have friedns in Japan wanting to donate money, but concerned about where money will go - not getting to the right place - don`t suppose you`ve had much opportunity to identify any places like schools or such that may require help in rebuilding - but if you know something? Our friends in an organisation and with a magazine want to begin a campaign so any information would help. Anyone else with ideas please let us know.
Thanks for all the good work - you Zandra, volunteers and staff and hope that everyone being searched for turns up alive and well
Go well

Our thoughts go out to all those impacted by this quake.

Lovely post and so true. Here I see the stoic local Chilean friends that say "we're Chilean, we are used to it" but I see something behind their eyes.
