No problem, Mike. It's a great little manual, a concise and practical thing to have in any situation. I really love that they make it available to everyone and in multiple languages.

Instant IS GOOD for something like EQ emergencies! Actually, I was able to cobble a workable coffee press from the remains of three previous coffee presses which I will be using for some time to come as the glass pot for the electric drip coffee maker met an untimely death at 3:25 am over a week ago.

I used my MSR backpacking stove (utilizes the same bencina blanca fuel -available at all Chile ferreterias- as the lantern) to heat the water as the gas lines in the departamento had not been reactivated yet.

(1) 1.5 liter bottle of Cab Sav broke and stained the rug in the bedroom.
(1) 1.5 liter bottle of Sav Blanc survived.
(3) liter bottles of Escu'o survived.
(2) hip bottles of JD given to me as a gift by my pareja survived.
(1) half empty bottle of aguardiente survived.

Warm Esco'o is not that bad really.

The challenge was perishable food. Four blocks of USA purchased blue ice probably gave me two extra days for the food in the freezer for a total of four days.

Careful planning limited my food losses in the fridge and freezer. On cooking and storing of cooked food: reheating to boiling for 10-15 minutes for sterilization (up to two times), storing in the coolest spot and being careful not to introduce bacteria and other contaminants in the prepared food worked beautifully.

My MSR stove had no problem handling a 5 liter pressure cooker when cooking beans.

This is something that was overlooked in Rune's thread. Does a 1.5L bottle of Gato or 120 survive better in an earthquake?

Well, at my workplace we've raised 12M pesos for the Red Cross in about 4 days. That's quite impressive :-).

"Last month earthquake did more than kill hundreds and devastate a large swath of Chile. It also hurtled the entire city of Concepcion 10 feet to the west." (a/p Aol news).

So Concepcion will be even more left leaning?
