The BBC reported it's an 8.3 magnitude.

OMG. I just saw this on CNN, 1 minute ago. They reported a 8.8 earthquake in Central Chile....

Yes, there's also a Tsunami warning. Apparently communications are going to be disrupted for a while so If anyone is out there please let us know when you're back online.

Any info from on the ground in conception would be greatly appreciated. My wife and 5 year old daughter are in San Pedro, Conception in a 2 story cement house. Haiti was a 7.2 roughly, lines are busy.........trying real hard not to freak out.

Where are you glass? I'm watching TVN in the US and they're talking about damage in Las Condes... No images from the south yet, it's still dark.
The president confirmed 5 dead so far...

Glasspharm, I am a Chilean who has been through 3 earthquakes. The last one in Vina del Mar was 8.5 and although scary, the majority of damage happens in very old poor areas. Chilean buildings area constructed to withstand pretty strong shocks and I lived in concrete houses most of my life.

Don't panic just yet. I'm sure you will find that they are both doing fine. If you need to talk, I'm around.

Hi everyone, I am on the ground here in pirque just south of santiago.
No reports of any major damage in santiago. We have no power or cellphone service, but we have internet ( I am currently on my blackberry).
So far there are 6 confirmed dead throughout the country. The epicenter was near conception in the bio bio region. It registered 9 there.
it hit around 3.30am at least that's what I remember when my wife woke me and we evacuated the house.
This has got to be the scariest quake I have ever been in.
But reports I am getting from friends around santiago no major damage reported.
I will posrt more later the sun should be upin the next 45 mins or so.

oops....been checking the the post but did not realize I need to refresh to get new posts. Thanks for the posts you guys, kinda spooky so much info from around Santiago but not a peep from conception nothing at all that I can find. Got the phone to ring 2 times out of 20 but then no answer, even all the neices like 6 girls and all there friends facebooking endlessly usually and nothing. Not sure if they have 3g or not but here that texting should still work w/out phone service. When I get any info I will pass it on....thanks

mauricio----I'm 2 hours from Seattle in Port Townsend,WA. TVN ? Will take a look. BBC I think it was finally posted a bloody picture, just a small head injury maybe. There is also a small connected group of Chileans here in Seattle from Conc./Sant. and we are in contact. They are also not able to get any info from Conc. so far.

We are still in Esquel, Patagonia... 800km away from the epicenter.
just happened to get up for a pee at 0333hrs...
it was probably the dogs in the neighborhood making a fuss...
they woke us...
dogs are good for knowing about tremors happening
things were swaying gently here for about 30-40 seconds
nothing falling off anything, but certainly a noticeable event
hope all allchileans (and ALL Chileans) weathered this earth~storm OK

atlantis----8.5 that was also a very big one & it did not wipe out the city? Well what happened in Haiti I wonder. Thats reassuring, from what little I saw when I was there and from some of the discussion about building practices in Chile.....who knows I thought. Guess I/we still don't. May be a strange sight when the sun comes up and people look around, 8.8 is pretty big. Just curious how do you like Australia?

We have been informed that 47 people have died, the majority in maule. 7th region. We have still have not been able to get calls in or out. The sun is now up and we are look at the world through different eyes
