Seems Argentina doesn't like Brits looking for oil around the Falklands. The last time they tried to assert sovereignty in that area, it turned out so well for them.

True. Of course the British are now less British than they were back then and ole Maggie T. ain't running the show. Interesting to see where this goes.

Argentina has a smaller less effective military now than it had in 1982, nobody will sell them arms, they don’t have the cash to pay, it will come to naught, it’s Kirchner using the militaries tried and true method of getting the Argentine People minds off the debt default that is brewing. If they default again they will need the oil out there to have schools and roads.

Sad sad case, they agreed in the 1983 treaty to give up their claims, I guess that really doesn't count the way they say they will get their fiscal house in order then say ja ja fooled you again, this time I believe the IMF will tell them they have real countries to help out and you dig yourself out. If that happens watch the nationalization of foreign asset, I’m glad I didn’t buy anything in Argentina, I feel sorry for some friends that have lived through the devaluations and bank freezes and worked a building up businesses.

I think the Argie's have a lot better chance now. The political climate has changed quite a bit in England, I don't think the UK Govt. can count on patriotic chest-thumping crowds to support them in taking back the Falklands this time, if Argentina invades.

The armed forces are extremely stretched, though, in Iraq and Afganistan. And no-one wanted those wars.

The Economist has an article on this too. Among other interesting tidbits, the author wrote that the Brits did not pursue exploratory drilling past one site in 1998 because the price of oil was too low to make it profitable venture to continue. Author is saying that now the higher price of oil has lured Desire Petroleum (the British company with the oh so pithy namesake) to bring back exploration... Yowzers.

And don't forget Chile's role.

What about that "special" relationship between the UK and Chile?
Does today's Chile really want to side with the UK this time?
I think a friendly source of local oil might swing support either way but can Chile trust Argentina to sell it aboveboard according to contract UNLIKE the natural gas fiasco a couple years back?

Margaret Thatcher deserves more respect than she gets, she entered a war without knowing that there was oil there up for grabs. (or perhaps she secretly knew there was oil there.)

I think Joe (British) Public would feel an element of humiliation if we were to give ground to the Argentines. I think the British public would support defending their sovereign territory even though being at war is a touchy topic in recent years.

The Falklands, Malvinas or whatever you wish to call them are not part of the British Isles, wrong hemisphere. The official status is "British Overseas Territory" ( http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts2002/uk ... 20008_en_1 ) The Queen is still legal head of state symbolically as in Canada, Australia, Jamaica...

While I would admit that the Empire has been shamefully responsible for a large amount of problems in the world, in the case of the Falklands, I don't see it quite like other situations. The people of the Falklands have been there well over 100 years and they want to be British. Argentina takes umbrage with this some 150 years later and occupies and conquerors this indefensible Island. "It is they [Argentina], not Britain, who wish to colonise the Falkland Islands." according to the local government of the Falklands website ( http://www.falklands.gov.fk/a13871.html )

Britain are in the process of devolving powers to the Falkland Islands so that they can achieve self rule.
