There was a court ruling on 13 July I believe in favour of continuing with the project, and found no substance in the protest by "No to Alto Maipo Citizens Voice." The judgment was evidently unanimous.
Some of the content of the protests has been laughable. One of the hired-gun "experts" claims that if the project is completed, the temperature of Santiasco will rise 4 degrees Celsius and the area around the affected canyons will be turned into a desert. There is even a claim that the project will mean the end to mountain climbing in the area because all the rocks will dry up and fall apart. Huh?
It looks like the project has comparatively little environmental impact, considering the benefits. There isn't even a major dam to be built since the waters are to be channelised into underground ducts and facilities. The dam is for only 300.000 cubic metres. The power generation system concept is a type used elsewhere in Chile (including in Patagonia) and the world.
Objections to the project seem to stem from that section of the population that would rather have Chile starve and freeze in the dark for want of electrical power.
