Teaching in Antofagasta, Chile

Postby seez on Mon Feb 01, 2010 1:46 am

Hi,
I've just got back from a fantastic holiday in Antofagasta, staying with my sister-in-law's family and also doing a tour of Bolivia and parts of Argentina. I've been primary teaching in NZ for almost 11 years and I'm now thinking of going back to Chile to teach English. Ideally I would love something in Antofagasta but obviously jobs don't regularly come up.
Can anyone help me with relevant websites or job companies or contacts that I could get in touch with about teaching jobs: ideally in primary or low level high school years. I am keen to find something for 2011, 2012 at least.
Thanks,
seez

May I ask, although perhaps a bit off subject, why you liked Antofagasta so well?

Actually probably more the people I met made it special. Yeah, it's really dry and completely different from where I am from (obviously no trees is quite strange) and jumping in at the deep end with very little Spanish was a challenge, but an experience. I have read many negative responses about the city on other websites. Are you in Chile? I guess Santiago is the better option for work but the distance from there to Antofagasta is a problem.

i was a teacher in the US for many years, and now i am teaching here in chile, in concepcion. i didn't try to teach in the k-12 system, partly because i don't want to work 40 hours per week. i can make just as much money teaching adults english and i work a lot less hours.

my understanding is that northern chile has good paying jobs for native english speakers. maybe you can research the language institutes in the area.

as a side note....i currently have a student who is planning to study in NZ next year. she is making good progress, she is motivated, but i can't help her learn the NZ accent. would you be willing to make some recordings for me and/or set up a weekly conversation with her to help her out?

Yes, I'm in Chile... but Antofagasta is never mentioned as a place of beauty so I was wondering what was the attraction. Knowing people will do it every time... it makes a place special. Seems that it isn't Antofagasta, but people, that make this town appeal to you. Hope it works out for you.

Try the Antofagasta International School (AIS.cl), they teach in English from Playgroup - 8th grade, after that it is in Spanish. They hire only native English speaking teachers for the younger grades and have teachers from the US, Aus, UK and NZ. You never know, they may still be looking for teachers for 2010.

Cali_chile, my sister does an online show on You Tube called The Daily English Show. She's a kiwi who has been teaching in Japan for the last 9 years. She does a show most days, your student could check it out to help with the accent. She is a teacher so does speak slower and more clearly than most of us in NZ, but it could help. The link, if I am allowed to post yet (I think i've reached my quota) is

Yep like Steph said the international school is your best bet here in Antofagasta. If you want some tutoring type rolls the language schools and the University are looking for native English speakers all the time I think
