Any ex-pat groups or clubs in La Serena?

Postby bbaythav on Sun Jan 31, 2010 10:33 pm

I have two kids, 3 and 1 years old. My wife works at the University of La Serena. We just moved here from California. Thus, it would be nice to touch base with some other ex-pats and discuss questions and issues. Thanks!

There is a very large Italian club in la serena (this comes from the very large influx of refugee/transplants after WWII) There is also an Andinismo club that is run by a chinese guy that has several stores in town. There is a large Yugoslavian enclave in La Serena as well (Rendic) . There is a large arab/palistinian prescence as well (Media Luna Stores) The obsersatory's bring their own group as well and there are people from all over.

The Rotary and Kiwnais are huge in La Serena and as well there are all kinds of little groups in addition. Talca and La Serena are huge on clubs.

As a pending anglo/celt migrant to Chile I would like to know if there is an organised, established expatriate social group or club of english speakers in Chile. I have slowly over a couple of years been trying to improve my Spanish but feel a bit daunted by the revelations I have read about Chileans speaking the worst and hardest to understand Spanish,... as if memorising the verb conjugations and genders isn't taxing enough!

Yes there are many mainly in santiago. if you search the forum for Social or expat you may find more information...
The groups vary... Young to old, professional to not... mixed, by language... and so on... really depends where you want to fit in....
