Indian Grocery in Santiago?

Postby caniwi » Sun Jan 17, 2010 2:26 pm

Hi. I've just moved to Santiago and I was wondering if anyone knew of an Indian grocery in the area? I'm living in Las Condes, so if there is one near there, even better! Thanks!

I don´t know of a Indian grocer as such, but I have found most products I like to use (like popadums, mango chutney, curry and so on - but I mostly cook South African Indian and Malay, so you may need stuff that I don´t even know!) from either Tottus on Kennedy or Jumbo La Dehesa. Are you looking for anything specific?

Thanks for your response - that certainly helps. As for specifics, I'm looking mainly for the spices like Gaaram Masala, cardamon pods etc and also paneer. Have you found any of these on your travels? As well, it would be nice to find some frozen naan and samosas for when I'm feeling lazy! Thanks!

Hi,

I have done much research about finding Indian grocery store in Santiago. Getting frozen naans or samosa is almost impossible here. However there is a shop "Tostaduría Talca".

You will get garam masala i.e. curry powder and other Indian spices here.

1) Av. Portugal 1801, Santiago
2) Av. Tobalaba 2051, Providencia
3) Av Miraflores 308, Santiago
We buy wheat flour (Herina Integral),soya beans, lentils and rice flour from this shop.

There is another shop near metro station Parque O' Higgins in Santiago.
The address is Av Matta 918, Santiago Centro [Tel: (56-2) 5544227]
Here you will able to get spices and dry fruits.

I hope this helps you.

Another tostaduria is Puerto Rico, San Pablo 921, and I tend to prefer it over Talca. They have more variety, I think, at least than the Talca on Miraflores.

Yes.. I miss curries too. I have done a lot of research in Santiago shops to get the actual curry powder.
I was staying in Leeds,UK earlier and I used to get all the required stuff there.
I miss Indian food here. Even after visiting a couple of Indian restaurants here, I can say that the food is not exactly it should be to call "Indian". I prefer to Jumbo curry powder now a days over others.

Thanks and Regards,
Shilpa

Gaztye - I used to live just outside Brum too and really miss the curries, especially going to the Ladypool Road after a night out and sitting with friends, eating a fantastic curry and trying to work our way through one of those huge table naans. Ah well... Anyway, I think Shilpa is right and the best curries at the moment are ones we make ourselves. Soul of India is pretty good, especially with the spices and the heat, but the naans are not so good (a bit soggy). Rishtedar curries aren't as nice but their naans are a lot better. I was out with friends last night and we all agreed that The Majestic is really not very good. Must stop talking about curries now, it's making me very homesick and very hungry. However, it is very important to keep the Indian food thread running!

Ah yes... this too has become a big issue for me when in Chile! The best place I have found is the fruit and veg market at La Vega. You can find fresh jeera, haldi, fennel, corriander and chile powder as well as fresh ginger and differnet types of Chili and any type of veg you desire so with a bit of imagination and searching you can put together your own curry powder. I did notice that the big jumbo at shopping la dehesa has a reasonable selection of asian food products ( surprisingly) in its international food section. Alternately....and im being serious..... grow your own spices and asian veggies.... the climate is perfect in the central valley and all you need is a terrace and some sun. Ive got an allotment in the uk and despite the dismal British weather I still manage to grow ocra, chillis, chick peas and corriander ( and grind the seeds to make powder). The only problem in Chile is obtaining the seeds but I think there is a guy in Santiago who specialises in supplying a whole range of seeds over the internet so he might be able to help ( you will have to google it as I dont remember his name)

A friendly Indian family opened a restaurant called "New Horizons" a few months ago on Merced between Miraflores and Mosqueto. They have a very affordable set lunch for $3.000 that gives you the choice between a meat and veggie dish.
