Have lived now here in Uruguay for several months now.
I have to agree with gregf on most parts.
Banking system much better than In chile. Was relatively easy to get an account.
Everything is expensive. 30-50% more than Chile.
Hard to find good wine. Hard to find good food. No MARISCOS!!!!
Leftist government even by european standards.
Gasoline has government set price. Thats why they dont even show the prices anywhere.
Workers strike whenever and wherever. They take over factories during strikes and the police and government wont do anything.
Feels like the government and people are not interested in foreigners to invest in industry here.
I was in Punta del Este for 2 hours and that was 2 hours too much. Nothing there for me.
Best place here is Colonia del Sacramento. Very few if no beggars. Safe to walk any time of day you can cross the street anywhere and people give you the way. There is one thing which is difficult to find in Chile. Renting a house built in 1680 is something I have not done in Chile.
People are nice and friendly once you get to know them.
