coming to Chile from Canada...

Postby MaryJo » Thu Dec 24, 2009 1:31 am

Hello everyone... I am arriving in Santiago the first week of January, and planning to be in the country for at least 3 months. We'll be renting a place out in Las Condes. I just wanted to stop in here, introduce myself and say hello! :)

As I mentioned I am coming in from Canada, where I've lived this past year, before that I was a year in Peru, and before that I lived in the USA (Atlanta GA)...I am originally from the USA, and husband is originally from Peru.

Just wondering if any of this group ever meet up for coffee or a beer any time? It'd be nice to meet some people here... so if you are interested or if there's a regular meet up, I'd love to know.
Does anyone play tennis? and where? my husband will be looking for someone to either practice or play with...
As for me...I plan to take up more Spanish classes. I am at an intermediate level, but want to get back into the full swing. I don't expect to become fully versed in Chilean Castillano, but just want to be a lot better at speaking... Anyone recommend a school?
Any advise or comment on visiting the wine areas would be great too... we are looking forward to spending a little time exploring the countryside... I am a certified wino :P

So, I hope to hear from some of you... cheers all! and Happy Holidays! See you soon... MaryJo

Getting out of town before the Olympics??? We will be in La Reina for approximately the same time period. Too old for tennis but not for wine! My Spanish is very basic but I was also thinking of lessons. There was a recommendation on this site of an instructor called Isabel Gonzalez in Santiago and the web site was posted.
We have rented a car a couple of times and traveled to the south and the Vina area. We leave Kelowna on January 11th so if we can help in any way, let me know.

Hi Snowman.. just so happens we are getting out of town just in time to miss out on the Olympics. Hubby has a contract working in Santiago, and what a perfect opportunity to escape the winter in Canada (not that its so bad in Vancouver), and get away from any impending Olympic madness that may ensue.
I do ok with Spanish, but still need to polish my conversational skills... thus more classes, plus I usually meet some pretty cool people in class. There's a couple of schools I've been recommended to in Belles Artes. I see that one w/ Isabel.. it's going to be a bit out of my way though. I am leaning toward http://www.escuelabellavista.cl/index.php. It seems to come with pretty favorable reviews.
I am leaving here next week, and can't wait to get there... I'll be posting here throughout. As for tennis... it's not my game; I'm more an observer. Hubby loves to play tho. And I am always up to share a few glasses of wine and some appis...
Ciao amigo! Hasta luego!

Hi MaryJo,
Welcome to Chile..

It's actually a very good idea to meet on the occasion of new year.
Is anybody interested to have a get together?
Admin, Can you please advise on this.

Thanks,
Shilpa

Shilpa - I arranged a get-together like this once. It would be nice to do again. You could just put a post asking who might be interested and what days/parts of town work best and go from there.
