If you have an account with HSBC abroad, you will be able to do transfers between HSBC accounts at no cost. You can even see and access all your HSBC accounts from a single web page – No catch.
However, since I opened an account with HSBC in Chile, I have had soooo many problems! I have finally given up and decided to close the account and try BCI.
I think that HSBC Chile are experiencing “start up” problems and have decided that after 5 months of ongoing problems, I no longer want to serve as their guinea pig (I might return to them in 1-2 years if I start hearing they have sorted themselves out).

Having said that, it might be that your experience will be different in which case HSBC could be a good option for you.

Good luck.

srasf wrote:Yes the transfers to and from Australia as we set up are killing us in fees but we can't see alternatives at this stage.

If you are paying wire fees at the receiving bank in Australia, you could eliminate them using xe.com. You will probably get a slightly better exchange rate too. That just leaves the Chilean bank to pay for initiating the transfer. From the xe.com FAQ:

Free delivery via EFT is currently available for the following currencies and countries:

* AUD to Australia.
* CAD to Canada.
* EUR to France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Spain.
* GBP to The United Kingdom.
* NZD to New Zealand.
* USD to The United States or Canada.

Just a quick idea, a lot of the Chileans I work with get they pay sent back to their families by the British company (I work outside of Chile) via Western Union back to their families in Chile. Anyone got any experience with Western Union in Chile?

I use to send money forwards and backwards between UK and Chile without any issues (apart from the rather chunky commission)

Use the search function. Plenty of comments previously, not usually positive...
