El Araucano, a hotel in central Concepcion, near the cathedral.

The food is good in my opinion, although my wife found the pond-sized dish of chicken soup a little too much to manage, the service is excellent, and you can sit out on the second floor balcony and take in the scene below.

The lobby area and dining rooms are spacious and the decor is superb, something which doesn't show up in the online photos.

The toilets even have a functioning seat cover dispenser, if you're that way inclined. :)

It's a little pricey but a good alternative to completos.

A few more good ones:

Victorino on Lastarria for the tablas. They aren't cheap, but they have a lot of food and it is very good. For two it is enough food for a dinner. We tried the Costa tabla the first time and the Victorino the second. The others sound great too. We haven't tried the rest of the menu, maybe next time.

Kleine Kneipe for the beer and hamburgers/sandwiches. They have Tauss Bräu beer on tap. There are now two locations, one in Providencia and one in Ñuñoa. http://www.kleinekneipe.cl/

:D Going from south to north,
Punta Arenas - La Marmita - great atmosphere, good food, good Calafate Sours (pictures on request)
Puerto Montt - Don Nelson, Angelmo - inexpensive, good Chiloé-style food
Santiago - Vacas Gordas - steaks to die for
Santiago - the little restaurant upstairs at the market - great seafood (pictures on request)
Vallenar - Moros y Cristianos - best fast food I've ever tasted, pretty place but lousy views outside
San Pedro de Atacama - Export Restaurant - I never thought I would like spinach soup but I DID !!
Arica - Residencial Tres Soles - owner Adolfo makes the best huevos revueltos
Then, miles away, the Swiss make the best chips/fries in the world !

The owner, David Botha, is south african, his wife Carmen italian.
Their food, wine and service is just perfect!!
The place is right next to the ruta 68 on the way from Santiago to Valpo.
After passing the second tunnel and the first exit you must immediately take the "calle local"
and after about 500m its there on the right, you cant miss it.
Open 7 days a week from lunchtime till late afternoon.

We were at Morande winery for lunch on the weekend, which is pretty much right next to Casa Botha, our S African friends who we were dining with had been to Casa Botha previously and were extolling the virtues of the food there. Morande has good food and the wines they recommend for each course are delicious. Don't order the breaded shrimp entree as they pour the sauce over them and by the time it gets to the table they're soggy. The seafood sticks are a better choice. The Wagyu main wasn't very good, 2 of us ordered it and weren't that happy with it. Overall though it was lovely, the other 2 diners were happy with their choices and there is a playground right next to the terrace to occupy the kids.

Ox on Nueva Constanera in Vitacura is well worth the visit. Meat soooooo tender, they were extremely busy on Friday night but happily accommodated a table of 10 without a reservation  The service is friendly, efficient and we always leave there with a smile on our faces because we have had a happy eating experience.

HOGS. On Los Leones nearly with the corner of 11 de Setiembre. 100% meat (pork, beef or turkey) hot dogs - more sausages than the humble frank. Standing and takeaway only. Excellent. They make their own sausages, no preservatives. The man behind the sausages worked at The Meat Hook in NYC.

For the vegetarians, they are planning to do some veggie options in the future. A sandwich place on Nueva de Lyon is also in the works.

have to say im NEVER going back to la Marmita, the owners have carrots up there arse, and there food is too try hard, the waiters are scared into good service and dont seem relaxed,

the layout of the restaurant is too sterile and cold for me.

and i asked to split the bill because it was too big for me to claim for work and they said they wont give me two boletas because they have already written one and gave me a line they cant write antoher, this is crap......

best place to eat in punta arenas:
http://www.viajeros.com/actividades/mer ... nta-arenas, all the restaurant food for 25% less in the price!

Thanks Tom--ate at Picada del Muertito when I was in Arica last month. The pastel de choclo was decent, and I enjoyed the guitarist who provided his music folcloric.

.

I don't recommend chilean food places often. But when I do, it must be exceptional.

And KAU on the costanera (Pedro Montt) in Puerto Natales has the best coffee (esp lattes) and croissants I have found anywhere in Chilito.

They understand the concept of 'background music." Open all year.

There is hope. I think i'll stay.
