i love the predictible path the USA takes...elects a president, wears his face on t-shirt, waves flags and shout his name...then slowly thees turn. lol its like USA does not seem to learn that no atter how much of hero they think they have appointed, the pres will never do what pleases the masses...bring back clinton!

But isn't this part of the corporate life of a mass democracy, "W.P."? Is Britain -- or Canada, or Australia, or Germany, or Israel -- now much different?

"True believers", though, do exist, even if as smaller minorities. I know persons who have unceasingly supported even a discredited president -- or prime minister, or chancellor -- for decades after the man (or woman) left office.

Canada and Australia have parliamentary systems of government, we don’t idolize our leaders as do countries with presidential systems, Also we have minority governments which may last only several weeks, Canada is in the midst of one of these eras and the two primary parties try to pump up their leaders and demonize the other guy which sometime blows up in their faces, as happened this past week when the Liberal minority leader said they will not support the ruling conservatives in one more vote, well the polls say 71% of Canadians do not want a fall election (winter elections here always punish the party that calls them) so the Liberals will have to back off and the new leader has to extract his foot from his mouth. We laugh at our leaders here more than we idolize them, eh!!

This may depend more upon the circles one moves in than upon the system of elective democracy. Almost no one I know here in the States really expects much from elected officials, for example, but, by contrast, I do know some Argentines (and a few Chileans) who do.

Or perhaps America's just moving through another cynical phase.
