It just out of the blue dawned on me, that we really really should have a dedicated food forum. Everything related to eating, cooking, food, goes here. Please enjoy.

Ohhhh welllll ...

Best American-style restaurant in Santiago (sometimes an effective relief against homesickness) --> A Pinch of Pancho

I have brought lots of gringo's (Americans, Canadians, aussies, kiwis, younameits) to that restaurant and not even one of them has left disappointed ... a pity it's so expensive, but still worth a visit ...

As a passionate cook, I have had good fortune to find ingredients, in Chile, for most cuisines. When not available, I've learned, as with every other immigrant (I've have come to terms with not only being an expat, but also an immigrant) worldwide, to substitute. However, I have not had any success in tracking down okra, which is a vital ingredient for cajun/creole dishes. Has anyone seen this elusive vegetable, frozen or fresh?

Starving for low country cuisine,
Eileen in Concepcion

A food forum is a GREAT idea.
g~j already learned LOTS from the existing food posts...
Looking fwd to more
BUT...
g~j hope this forum will never degenerate to where the newest KFC or McDoodoos might be in various cities.

A degenerative tangent... if we may be so bold?
The aforementioned franchises exist in so, so many countries - and having traveled widely, we seen this pervasive influence as one of the dark-sides to globalization.

Our own response...
g~j never have, nor ever will, eat in such nefarious places... but when in need of a good bowel movement, in some far-flung location... when we see the Golden Arches and the Smiling Colonel - we are assured of pristine bathrooms and spotless toilets.
g~j have taken McShits and KFCraps in many locales - always greatly satisfying - and always free.

Our profuse apologies to all, in advance, for such a hijack of topic...
But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go. :pooh:

Anyone else a pebre fanatic? I loved trying the different pebres people put on the table when I was in Chile and my DH makes really good pebre here at home (currently in the USA/moving to Chile in June). My babies are calling me and I have to go, but will post his usual mix later - anyone else care to share?

My partner says he is sure he has seen golden syrup in Tottus, but I'm not convinced. We are shopping tomorrow so I'll have a look because I want some for a recipe too.
