audeo,

There is also a BancoEstado ATM inside the mall, first floor, north end (I believe) near the escalators.

How to avoid the Argentina ATM Fee

Postby eeuunikkeiexpat » Tue May 25, 2010 9:13 pm

I just ran a controlled test to test the past rumors out. If you are in an Argentina city with a:

(1) Citibank branch and
(2) have a Cirrus network (doesn't have to be Citi issued) ATM or debit card and
(3) use a non-Banelco machine (example: at Mendoza Citibank there are 4-5 Citibank ATMs and 1 other one clearly labeled that it is connected to Banelco)

there is no 15-16 peso Argentina-side bank charge.

I believe we are seeing a banking trend where the banks need to make money the old fashioned way. I tried to log in and buy a few "credit default swaps" and I was told the charges were greater than the value of the bogus bonds, even though they were insured by AIG! So I tried to take out a second mortgage and they told me I would owe them money because my house is "underwater"! I fooled them though, I took out a credit card at WallMart! They can catch up with me next year after the market recovers! Meanwhile I'm going to see my doctor about my ED. I'm all worn out from this crap!

On the general theme of new bank charges and restrictions, last year I suddenly started losing $30 of my salary payment wire from the US in transit every fortnight. Apparently BoA (the intermediary bank) just started subtracting it at will and without warning. Fortunately my company has recently figured out another arrangement where they can pay into my account locally...

Cheers,

James.

g~j's 1st ATM bizness in XV region... (been liv'n on cash...)
Using a Cirrus card for a personal acct. with BMO...
250000 pesos - no fee from BancoEstado.
BMO online gave us a rate of 493~Cdn$...
Versus the spot rate of 505~Cdn$ today...
So a 2.4% bite on the exchange rate...
Plus a $5 fee from BMO... =1% of transaction
To update... we saw that the above withdrawal was mistakenly from our savings vs. checking acct... now, we only use the checking - structured to have NO fee :)
Roughly 3.4% it cost us to have 25 brand new, sequentially numbered, 10000 peso note in hand.
All things considered... we can live with that. :alien:
Wholeheartedly ejecting numerous 10.000 peso notes from it's mouth, then spitting your receipt, and then.. you know, a small 2g pack of NESCAFE! *

But Rune... no 2g. Nescafe here, in XV region... not that we drink that crap anyway

Re: ATM fee

Last year I lived in Vina for 5 months and, after arriving, was told that people with Bank of America ATM cards got free withdrawals from ScotiaBank ATMs.

I am moving to La Araucania region (I realize this isn't very specific, this is just the info I have at this point) in 3 weeks ... does anyone know (1) if it is true that BoA customers get free use of Scotia Bank ATMs, (2) if there are any ScotiaBank ATMs in Temuco, Pucon, etc and (3) if any other ATMs in La Araucania have similar agreements with banks in the states.

I am trying to decide if it is worth it to open a small account with BoA in order to avoid the ATM fees that can add up.

Thanks for everyone's help. If people have more general advice for La Araucania (i'll be there from end of July to beginning of December) I'd love to hear it. Just PM me. Thanks!

Mister!

In this very topic, on just the previous page, this poster wrote, that:

Scotiabank/Temuco: no fee, the ATM (Bulnes con Varas, Temuco center), accessible 24/7. On the very previous page.. have you read this, or have you not?..

Mister!

Some people on this board are honestly trying to help each other, and the readers, by posting here what is true and correct. If it is said here: "no fee" -- it means, "no fee whatsoever on the ScotiaBank side", assuming that you have an intl. VISA/PLUS/CIRRUS linked card. Your U.S. based bank fee: are they not easily obtainable from your U.S. bank?..

Mister:

Where it is said: PLUS ONLY, it means just that! Where it is said CIRRUS ONLY, it means nothing but that!.. No one is willing to respond to you, as they think that asking questions like that is but showing disrespect towards the forum members, who have already posted the information you requested.

{ Now for everyone else: Actually, the other Scotia's ATM in Temuco is near the MALL/PORTAL/JUMBO, across the street, the address AVENIDA ALEMANIA 0884, or very next to that number }

Alliances change, mergers happen, names change, bank ATM country fees change + or -, your home bank fees change usually +, your favorite ATM machine may not be working the day you go into town, etc. Nothing today may be the same tomorrow.

A collection of cards from various banks, CUs, etc. split between working on the Plus and the Cirrus systems is your best bet.

Along with the allchile forum bank fee list in this thread, another useful link is:

Chile on your own means becoming search savvy, patiently discerning and going the extra mile (maybe after some circles) to get what you need. It is what it is and you will soon find out if you are cut out for it.

You may be surprised that even a country like Chile has fully functioning relatively informative to informative bank websites.

I did read that and was not sure what kind of card that poster had. Just needed a little clarification. Thank for for your responses. If you are seriously upset over a rather innocent and harmless forum post, I am sorry. I have been reading this site daily but am still finding my way around.
