I just came from Argentina, where Banelco raised the fee to $5.59 "for each 700 pesos (about US$200). On top of that, you have you own bank fee, usually US$1.50 plus the mandatory 3% for a "foreign fee". That's over 5% to withdraw your own money from a ATM. So 2500 pesos doesn't look so bad,but as the greenback continues to decline,it will add up quickly.

The plus of the Chile ATMs over the Argentina ATMs are the much higher w/d limits though I've heard the Link network machines in Argentina have upped their limits to $700 USD equivalent.

You are the first report I've read that the previously new Argentina per use fee is now being applied per amount. Hopefully not shades of what is to come in Chile as the Chile fee seems to have come directly on the heels of the Argentina per use fee implementation.

A few corrections, there are cards that have no ATM fee or exchange rate fee that even reimburse you for ATM-owner fees around the world. Then it is all downhill from there with many having no or a very low per use ATM fee and a 1-2% exchange fee. The worst like BofA slap both a $5 per use fee and a 3% exchange fee. I've posted a link to a helpful FlyerGuide wiki comparison chart of debit and credit cards for US persons many times on this board.

Banco Condell (a.k.a. Banco Condell de CorpBanca): no fee as of yesterday, 11/10/2009. If you're driving through Temuco: their ATM is right in the downtown, just next to the main plaza (street address: Manuel Montt 822). This ATM should work 24/7, as this is a separate booth (self-service type, that opens with your card), next to their main entrance. A link to their other ATMs, that was posted earlier by eeuu, is:

eeuunikkeiexpat,

Please do not mistake silence for lack of interest. This is a matter of considerable interest to me. Unfortunately, I have nothing to contribute, being out-of-country.

I am wondering, now that so many countries have figured out how to screw gringos this way, do we have a better option? (This may have been addressed in other threads. Sorry.)

Many thanks for your research!

I tried Banco Estado, CorpBanca and Itaú and my card will not work. Shucks, my card is on the Cirrus, Star and Pulse networks and is a Visa. I have started having to just eat the fees, and its getting very annoying with the dollar being so weak.
I walked by a Banco de la Nacion Argentina the other day on Agustinas and Morandé, just near the Moneda - they were closed however. Does anybody know if they have an ATM inside during hours?

AAAAAactually eeuu, :) I posted about it on this same thread back in August. The changes in Argentina came about AFTER Chile's implimentation, but happened in all ATMs at once, and there aren't any ATMS where you aren't charged, unlike Chile. The link is useful!

Just a little update for those who are interested about the other side of the Cordillera:

There is a 11.46 Arg. peso fee for all transactions in the Link and Banelco networks, no matter how much you withdraw for foreign cards only. There used to be a 300 peso limit on withdrawals which supposedly has been upped to 1000 pesos.. however I was only able to withdraw 700 pesos the last time I went to a Santander Banefe branch and was also charged the 11.46 peso fee.

Actually, I beat you:
topic2943-30.html#p29172

I first read about the Argentina fee back in these threads:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/argentin ... -fees.html
http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g3 ... trict.html

So I need to correct and say it appears to be virtually a simultaneous implementation given the reported dates in question though it appears from the research that Chile started a week before the Argentina implementation.

What is in question was a poster reporting that the Argentina fee is now being levied per amount but THIS HAS NOT BEEN REPORTED OR CONFIRMED ANYWHERE ELSE.

And I do appreciate your interest and participation in this thread. :)

Hi all,

Please let me update my last post about the Argentina ATM fees. Although the Banelco system said the fee would be $11.49 pesos, Citibank posted US $5.49 debits for each use. At 3.80 per, that's actually 21 pesos per use. When I emailed Citi they said they had no control over the fees.

So,as usual, you can't trust anything the banks in Argentina say, even the ATM's lie. However, if I use my Citi ATM at a Citi branch, I can withdraw 3000 pesos without a fee, except for the 3% they now charge.

Charles Schwab says on their website that they will refund any "foreign" ATM fees for their bank users. Does anyone have any experience with Schwab?

Thanks,
Albertcscs
