Traveling in Chile alone (for females)

Postby dashboard12 on Wed Jul 01, 2009 11:10 pm

I'm new to this forum and looked around a bit and didn't find this topic - but please re-direct me if there is a thread already that I overlooked.

I'm moving to Chile next month, and I'm planning on doing some traveling - Atacama, random day trip hiking, Patagonia maybe, perhaps over to Mendoza since it's so close. Anyways I was wondering how safe it is to travel alone in Chile especially since I'm female. I've traveled alone in Asia, the US (where I live now) and Europe before, but I'm not sure they are the same (and I'm Asian so traveling in Asia wasn't too conspicuous).

If anyone has advice on how/where to travel safely alone, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks! :-)

I've travelled alone in more than 10 Latin American countries. I don't think you'll find it any different here to anywhere else. I'm sure you're accustomed to establishing what/where is safe, and what's not, wherever you go. As an Asian, you may not be as noticably different as the average Anglo Saxon, due to the mestizo influence in Chile. My Chilean friends in Sydney, Australia are occasionally addressed by Chinese people mistaking them for also being Chinese. That is, until you open your mouth in Chile, assuming Spanish is not your first language!

As a male of Asian ancestry, I've found wearing shades and getting a light tan helps you blend in a little. 8)

Guess what the common nickname is for a native Chilean with Asian-like eyes?

Hola pos chino, cómo estai? :alien: (Just kidding, don't get offended as I'm aware you may not like being addressed for a nationality you probably aren't, but that's how it is here)

It is much safer for a women to travel alone in Chile than in the United States. In fact, I would not recommend anyone travel alone in the States.

Chile is not a place where a woman should be especially concerned about traveling alone. I've traveled around alot by myself (bike, bus, hitchiking), and have found the place to be quite safe (not that I exactly recommend hitchiking).

As far as I can tell, the most dangerous conditions you can find yourself is being young, male, drunk on the street alone at night. I have several friends that fit these categories (Chilean and Gringo) that had bad stuff happen.

Hope we've allayed your fears a little!

Even in Santiago you will often see women walking on the street at say 2 or 3 A.M., or at least groups of women.

By the way, hitchhiking is basically the most common form of public transport in most of the rural areas. Would not recommend it in most of the central regions, but just about everywhere else in Chile it is very common. Hell, down the Patagonia I use to get to my favorite fly fishing spot every evening outside of town by hitchhiking. I was picked up (no not arrested) several times by the police, including the chief of police. In fact, it is considered kind of rude to drive by someone hitchhiking on the side of the road and not pick them up if you have space. I have jumped in vans and backs of trucks with like 6-8 people. I might also add however, that if you spend more than a week or two in those communities you will likly know everyone on a first name basis anyway, so it is not exactly like getting picked up by stranger and the murder rates in those communities are around 1-3 people ( measured in recorded history, not by the year, day, or hour).

I did and I travel all over the States alone....I never had any trouble once here.

A little over the top: despite its other problems, and despite a contrary obsession by ignorant film producers who seldom leave greater New York city and southern California, the United States is indeed a physically very safe country.

Really Charles, what are you talking about?
I travel all the time in the states, as do millions of American women everyday, whether to work or to the mall or across the country. There is nothing strange or unusual about seeing a woman on the streets alone. I suppose if a bad guy is out looking for a target he might chose a woman alone, but how many millions maybe billions of times a day are women out alone in public and absolutely nothing happens to them!

That's a pretty loaded statement. If you're talking about South Central LA or downtown Detroit, than yeah. You can't really make a blanket statement like "The US is safe" or the "The US is not safe" because the US is incredibly diverse by region, and that includes crime. It TOTALLY depends on the city, region, state, etc.

Me thinks it's just admin and his way of poking the stick to stoke the forum fires (activity).

Both Chile and China start with the Old English letter "Chi" (and RWS will correct me, if I'm wrong). Hence, admin's statement is right.

I call this "logic" -- "the Science of Reasoning". So simple.

Have you been to China, SeNor Gringo?.. :alien:
