I was at the institutochilenobritanico today and had a look at the library of over 2000 books in 2 rooms. Its 10000 pesos a year to join. You can read at the library or take up to 2 or 3 books a week to your home .The american institute is just around the corner so will check it out next time to see if it has a similar set up.

yes Free international delivery - most of the books were cheaper then what I paid for them in Australian book stores too.

hmm I think it took a few weeks- one was a boxed set of books too- so free postage on that was a major bonus

Okay so ordered 27/12 and got them last weekend. So just under 1 month

I will have to keep them in mind when I have to buy some books.

I have a reasonably large collection of used paperbacks that I have (mostly)brought back from the states on various trips and have been read and re-read. Almost all fiction and pretty diverse collection. And it's time to sell a lot of them as we are going back to the states before winter here and will join spring/summer there. We will be back as Chile gets warm again :D but are running out of room for books. I don't have a list together yet but a lot of different stuff from Nelson DeMille to Stephen KIng to John Grisham to Elmore Leonard to Larry McMurtry. Quite a few mystery/horror types. Also a lot of NYT bestsellers and quality paperbacks. I have to run some errands but, if anyone is interested, pm me and I'll answer later. I don't have specific prices in mind but am thinking 2500 pesos a book with increasing discounts for increasing volume buying.

I am about 40 minutes SE of Santiago.

My friend recommended http://www.bookdepository.co.uk. Free shipping on all books internationally. I haven't tried it, but she said her order took two weeks to get here (Providencia). No problems with customs/duty either.

For those that ordered on bookdepository.co.uk, how were you able to get your books sent to Chile. As I am looking at the site and trying to order, Chile is not an option for international shipping. Did I miss something??

As I was going to put in an order this week, I emailed The Book Depository to ask why Chile's no longer on the list of countries they deliver to, and they said the delivery network they use can't do Chile. I emailed back to ask why, and got no explanation.

Frustrating.

Books are expensive and take up a lot of weight. Me? I prefer to travel light and there are two options for this.

1) You can buy a Sony Reader for less than $180 now and they read epubs and pdfs. It uses Eink tech and the battery lasts long enough to read several books. If you already know how to use bittorrent then you can find just about any book online in either epub, lit or pdf format. You can use a program like Calibre to convert lit files over to epub. Voila, all of your books for free. If you can't find one online for free, then just go to the Sony Reader store and buy it directly from them or go to B&N and buy the ebook there. You'll have to break the DRM, but you'll be able to read it on your Sony.

2) Buy an Ipod Touch for less than $190. You can download the Stanza app for free and it reads epub files. Use Calibre as noted above and convert anything you get into epub. Free books. The downside is that the screen is backlit, but it's not too bad on the eyes. The plus of the Ipod touch is that it does music and videos and even does games. You can use the wifi to surf the net. There are tons of apps out there to do just about anything. It's a multifunction.

Just some ideas out there for fellow readers.

Yeah I've been considering a move to a digital reader but I want one that is open (as opposed to closed like the Kindle). the Sony reader looks to be the best option out there right now. Thanks for a heads up on the conversion software.

Yeah, the Sony is pretty open in that it's easy to put any book you find online on it, it's also cheap. The Nook from B&N supports epub and other open options as well. While they use their own form of DRM, it's been broken so it's not hard to strip the DRM off of the files. I still prefer my Sony Reader because I don't like the fact that these internet connected readers can yank stuff off at will.
