On the betterworld site, it's a flat $4 a book shipping. I've never had books shipped from Amazon(or Betterworld-waiting to see how the larger shipment went) and really couldn't figure out how much i would be charged. Their formula seems to include pre-charging possible import fees and then crediting the unused part back. For me, it's like taxes-it's not so much the amount as the paperwork.

How much was the amazon charge per book(roughly)?

Ok, so I got my books in today!
In total I ordered 7 books and they all arrived directly to my door without having to pay any type of taxes.
The shipping wasn't super fast, but it definitely wasn't slow by any means compared to other things I've ordered.
I ordered all used books, and although they are used, they are in really great condition. None of them have any markings or anything.

So, just to update you all. Take care!

So Heather...
How long did it take exactly? Also, did you order all 7 books at one time or individually....

I ordered all the books at the same time, and they were all shipped together. From the day I ordered until they actually arrived, it was almost a month. And from the date that they confirmed that they had been shipped it was about 3 weeks.

My wife really loves her Kindle. She's buying about 3 books per month on average and at that rate it takes about a year to pay back for the device since you don't have shipping fees and ebooks are cheaper than paperbacks. (It helps that her Kindle was given to her though!)

I was at one of the Borders in Manhattan today and saw a big ad campaign for a new ereader from Sony. It looked pretty cool and I immediately thought of my allchile.net friends who have been looking at the kindle.

Night owls and bibliophiles,

tomorrow at 10 AM (I think it goes about two hours), the Stgo. Community Church at Holanda 151 is having its couple-times-a-year booksale.
Books in English, if memory serves, 500 pesos for paperbacks, and 1,000 for hardbacks. There are some real treasures to be found as embassy folk and others leave or downsize and leave good books behind. Donations (books) accepted as well. They also sell knitted woolies and sometimes jams and things at this event.

Last time I went, I'd say there were a couple thousand books at least. Sorry not to advise earlier, I just checked my mail and re-remembered.

See you there. Not that you'll know I'm me, but you know...

Was there any declaration of contents or value on or with the shipping label?

If so, what did it say?

Thanks for posting this information. I didn't see it this time but hope you'll post the next time. It would be worth a trip to Santiago for me! :D

I wish I had seen the post about the book sale earlier! Please, let us know when the next sale is!!

Yeah, there was a customs label on the outside and it simply stated "books". I already threw the box out, but if I remember correctly they put the total value as like $8 or $9 USD. I suppose this is close to the actual value since they were all used.

Has anyone used Barnes and Noble?

I have a friend here in Australia who has ordered from them and postage is pretty cheap and fast.

does anyone know if it is possible (impossible?) to buy a Chile lonely planet in Santiago in English?

I screwed up terribly in only bringing Discovery Channel guidebook my brother bought me before moving.... doh. You can actually buy and download chapters of Lonely Planet guidebooks, which I've done for a couple chapters of Chile, but it just doesn't compare to having an actual book.

I'm close to just having my family buy and send me one from the states, but before making them do that I thought I'd try and buy one here first (even if it's more expensive)..

First time posting on the Forum, so forgive me if I do something wrong!

Here are two options for books in Santiago:

1.Santiago Community Church has its next used book sale on Saturday, August 15 from 10:00am - Noon at Avda. Holanda 151 in Providencia, only two blocks from the Tobalaba metro. 1000s of paperbacks and magazines in English, always some in a few other languages. I think the latest charge is $500 or under per book - really new ones might costs a little more.

2. The International Association of Chile (a recent merge of the American, Canadian and British groups) has a super lending library that has over 2000 books - many very recent. Membership to the IAC is $42.000 a year - around $80. It sounds like a lot of you spend that in a few months in books, so it would be well worth your investment! (plus membership fee gives you access to a great yahoo group, monthly gatherings, interesting speakers, city tours, weekly lunches, networking opportunities and a lot more). Check out <LINK REMOVED PER ADMIN NEW USER POSTING POLICY> for a list of books at the house (under "our house" and "English book library") or email me for more info.
