we get amazon books regularly - as long as they don't go over a certain weight no probs... have incurred some random delivery charges when they were above a certain weight (ostensibly, a parcel of more than 2kg) but it's not consistent. Wouldn't expect it to be!

I have ordered previously from Amazon, and have had no problems with the arrival of the books. The only problem I have is that they charge a lot for shipping. Especially when you compare it to the $4 USD shipping from Better World Books. Plus when buying on Amazon, I´ve never been able to get any used books that will ship to Chile. And since I prefer to buy used, since they are cheaper and also it´s better to reuse rather than trash them, I don´t use Amazon anymore unless it´s something I can´t find anywhere else.

On the betterworld site, it's a flat $4 a book shipping. I've never had books shipped from Amazon(or Betterworld-waiting to see how the larger shipment went) and really couldn't figure out how much i would be charged. Their formula seems to include pre-charging possible import fees and then crediting the unused part back. For me, it's like taxes-it's not so much the amount as the paperwork.

How much was the amazon charge per book(roughly)?

Ok, so I got my books in today!
In total I ordered 7 books and they all arrived directly to my door without having to pay any type of taxes.
The shipping wasn't super fast, but it definitely wasn't slow by any means compared to other things I've ordered.
I ordered all used books, and although they are used, they are in really great condition. None of them have any markings or anything.

So, just to update you all. Take care!

So Heather...
How long did it take exactly? Also, did you order all 7 books at one time or individually....

I ordered all the books at the same time, and they were all shipped together. From the day I ordered until they actually arrived, it was almost a month. And from the date that they confirmed that they had been shipped it was about 3 weeks.

My wife really loves her Kindle. She's buying about 3 books per month on average and at that rate it takes about a year to pay back for the device since you don't have shipping fees and ebooks are cheaper than paperbacks. (It helps that her Kindle was given to her though!)

I think there are several of us on Allchile considering the Kindle...Vicki, oh Vicki....and would love to know what your wife (or other kindle user) likes and doesn't compared to good old books. Allchile review anyone? :D

I was at one of the Borders in Manhattan today and saw a big ad campaign for a new ereader from Sony. It looked pretty cool and I immediately thought of my allchile.net friends who have been looking at the kindle.

Night owls and bibliophiles,

tomorrow at 10 AM (I think it goes about two hours), the Stgo. Community Church at Holanda 151 is having its couple-times-a-year booksale.
Books in English, if memory serves, 500 pesos for paperbacks, and 1,000 for hardbacks. There are some real treasures to be found as embassy folk and others leave or downsize and leave good books behind. Donations (books) accepted as well. They also sell knitted woolies and sometimes jams and things at this event.

Last time I went, I'd say there were a couple thousand books at least. Sorry not to advise earlier, I just checked my mail and re-remembered.

See you there. Not that you'll know I'm me, but you know...
