Unless there is a deliberate and justifiable use of an alternative style, writing with something close to standard spelling and grammar is usually viewed as a sign of respect for fellow foreros. I participate in other forums where the moderators will publicly berate participants for such transgressions. It helps make a forum look like something other than a gathering of dyslexic 14-year-olds learning to type text messages in the dark.

Thanks John. As always, we Irish disprove Shannon's information theory and convey so much meaning in a single word.

Not sure about that! :)

Here's an interesting article regarding the upcoming Irish Presidential election - it seems that Oscar Wilde has been reborn! Arguably, Ireland is still the land of poets and scholars. 8)

Thanks for clarifying. I try to understand Spanish used in this forum, and could not find a definition of "patiando".

No hay problema, yo creo que lo que deberían de aprender los extranjeros en Chile es el lenguaje coloquial, y si no entienden algo o me quieren preguntar sobre alguna palabra ''slang'' esta bien, yo puedo tratar de responder.

saludos.

Thank you for the offer, but it is hard enough learning 'standard' Spanish, for which there are online translators and dictionaries. So I usually do not try to understand 'Chilean Spanish' or 'slang', but will learn it after moving to Chile.

Considering the common definition of "speaking English" in Chile is knowing that "Lucky Light" is the white pack, his English isn't all that bad. That being said, discouraging someone to express himself in a foreign language, because they don't command it perfectly in writing, is not a very polite or even smart thing to do. If everyone thought like that, a lot of people on this forum would never dare to utter a word in Spanish.

P.S.: This does not include under-educated native English speakers substituting "you" with "u" or those not knowing the difference between "your" and "you're". Those are to be belittled extensively at every opportunity.

P.P.S.: I am German. If you find any grammatical errors in this post, you may keep them.

"out of 27 items purchased....6 not functioning...returned and told no refunds...YEAH...Im Scottish, good luck keeping my money!!!
9 other items were incomplete, parts missing or broken components...4 of which I exchanged and 3 of which had the same issues....upon speaking with the manager ( who didnt care 1 iota) i decided to leave the store before I gave myself an annurism of frustration."

To get back to the crap service and away from the grammar issues

Our three worst experiences in Chile were these:
A: buying a flat-screen TV in Paris (sales guy had minimum english and we had no spanish). We were offered a free wall-mount which we didn't want but took because it was offered. Paid the price, the Paris guys got it from out back, carried down to the car and we took it home. Upon opening the TV box hubby looked at it and said "this has been used". He could see the marks on the back of the TV where the wall-mount had been previously attached. He stopped then and put it all back in the box.
We phoned a Chileno friend who came with us to the store where they sheepishly went and got a new one for us and changed it over. I'm sure without our friend it would have been a far longer experience.

B: having alot of our stuff purchased for the apartment on our agents company account. Sodimac at Av Kennedy were quite good. They gave us a person to walk around with, i pointed to large stuff (fridge, washer etc) and she wrote it down, and I threw smaller stuff in the trolley. This took about an hour all up.
Then we went to the Factura check-out and it took TWO AND A HALF HOURS to process the bill and organise delivery. I was about to commit suicide at the end of it.
To top it off, when they delivered, we ended up with TWO FRIDGES and zero vacuum cleaners. Don't you think when they were looking at this that they would wonder why two fridges had been ordered and perhaps phone to check?

C: Buying a Christmas tree at Sodimac (one of the ones with the lights permanently attached). Got it home and the lights didn't work. took it back -with very bad spanish and had to argue for them to exchange it (and pre-test it). Finally got that sorted out, but was back in the store a week later and saw the very same tree sitting on the shelf for sale. For goodness sake - it's broken - throw the bloody thing out - don't sell it to unsuspecting gringos!!!!

It's so nice to be back in a country where you don't even need to receipt at the larger places to return stuff. :)

Yes, I found that very convenient in the US, especially with all the planned obsolescence and cheap crap. It prepared me well for Chile :)
