Will never happen: Chilean law will still apply and they will still hire Chilean citizens, most likely from other banks. Expect the same poor service. Corporate culture will never trump native culture here... Just make a trip to McDonald's and you'll see what I mean.

Also, I don't think anyone should ever welcome the presence of Wal-Mart anywhere.

They might be able to pull it off.
When we shopped at Lider this past Feb. my wife overheard two employees discussing Walmarts takeover. The main theme was things will change and we had better stop screwing around, or else.
Maybe we should all open accounts here at Walmart bank to establish a track record with them.

Really interesting. Perhaps they can instill some difference into the system there at least using international techniques and forcing it into the system.
Eventually, if they do well and loosen the standards for opening accounts in Chile, they could make it easier for everyone in the long haul.

I am curious to see what their tactics will be.

Latin America needs a dose of good old American efficiency, at least at that level. I’ve lived in both for over twenty years, and if I had to say in a nutshell what the difference between the two is, that’d be it.

I will say that neither I nor my hubby were Wal-Mart fans b/4 moving to Chile. That being said, we were thrilled that Wal-Mart bought Lider and we have already seen changes for the good in the short time since the buyout. I personally am welcoming the introduction of products I was having a hard time locating here.
As to a Wal-Mart bank, where do I sign up? I have never seen a more disorganized and ridiculous way of banking than what I have witnessed here. We have lived here nearly a year now and we have yet to open a bank account here because of this. If a bank that knows how to run things efficiently and with a sense of good customer service wants to open up here in Chile...I will be the first to get in line...hopefully the line will move quickly and not trail around the building either.

They just need to automate the bank more, and eliminate the idiots at the desks. It is the middle management covering their rears that is screwing up the banking in Chile (and many other industries). Get rid of those guys, and about 90% of the banking problems in Chile will be eliminated also.

If the employees can not do the job, eliminate the employee. Don't just keep adding employees, and think the job is going to get accidentally get done (which is essentially how any banking gets done in Chile at all).

By the way, I will extend any Wall Mart executive passing by the forum the same offer I have made to any other bank executive in Chile.

If you can stop the stupidity in the banking, and create mechanism to reasonably allow foreigners to open accounts I will provide free advertising on the Chile forum and send you all of my clients.
